EAT 252 Tutorial 3 (Open Channel)

This document contains tutorial problems for computing hydraulic radii and discharge in open channel flow. It involves calculating hydraulic radii for circular pipes and rectangular channels running partially full. It also involves computing hydraulic radii and discharge for various channel cross sections, including a rain gutter, rectangular channel, and V-notch and contracted weirs. The maximum possible flow over a 60 degree V-notch weir and required length of a contracted weir are also determined.

EAT 252

TUTORIAL 3 (OPEN CHANNEL)

1.

Compute the hydraulic radius for a circular drain pipe running half full if its inside
diameter is 450 mm.

2.

A rectangular channel has a bottom width of 5.50. Compute the hydraulic radius when
the fluid depth is 0.85 m.

3.

For this question, refer to Figure 1 below:

15.24 cm

8.89 cm
5.08 cm

10.16 cm
Figure 1

a)

Compute the hydraulics radius for the section shown in the figure below if water
flows at a depth of 5.08 cm. The section is that of a rain gutter for a house.

b)

Repeat Problem 1 for a depth of 8.89 cm.

c)

Determine the normal discharge for an aluminium rain spout with the shape
shown below that run at the depth of 8.89 cm. Use n = 0.013. The spout falls
10.16 cm over a length of 18.288 m.

4.

For the this question, consider a Figure 2 below:

Figure 2
a)
b)
c)

Calculate the hydraulic radius for the given channel, if the water depth is 0.80 m.
Repeat the question (a) above if the water depth is 2.5 m.
Determine the normal discharge, given that it is made of unfinished concrete and
has a slope of 0.5 percent.

5.

Determine the maximum possible flow rate over a 60 V-notch weir if the width of the
notch at the top is 55.9 cm.

6.

Determine the required length of contracted weir as shown in Figure 3 below to deliver
0.424 m3/s of water. The height of crest is to be 0.91 from the channel bottom the
maximum head above the crest is to be 5.5 m.
