This document contains 7 questions related to fluid mechanics and fluid statics. Question 1 asks about determining the force on a steel cylinder submerged in a channel where the upstream and downstream water depths are given. Question 2 asks about determining the total pressure and center of pressure on a submerged plane surface. Question 3 asks about determining the maximum height of the center of gravity of a load placed on top of a floating square buoy. Question 4 asks about determining the least angle of a floating cone for stable equilibrium. Question 5 asks about determining the water depth required to open a hinged rectangular sluice gate with a suspended weight. Questions 6 and 7 provide additional diagrams and ask about determining heights, forces and reactions related to submerged gates and

ECE 2203: FLUID MECHANICS I

ASSIGNMENT II, 2011/12

Fluid statics & Buoyancy
A steel cylinder of diameter 2.5m, and 5m in length lies across an open rectangular
channel of width 5m.The channel conveys water the depths at the upstream and
downstream sides of the cylinder being 2.5m and 1.25m respectively. Determine the
magnitude, direction and location of the resultant force on the cylinder caused by the
external water pressure.
2. Determine the total pressure and depth of centre of pressure on one side of the plane
surface submerged in water as shown in Fig. 1.

3. A square buoy of length of side 2m, 1.5m high and weighing 12kN floats vertically in
salt water of density 1025kg/m3. Its centre of gravity is 0.75m from the bottom. If a
concentric load of 3kN is placed on top, find the maximum height of the centre of
gravity of this load above the bottom if the buoy is to remain stable.
4. A solid cone whose material is of specific gravity 0.8 floats in oil of specific gravity
0.9 with its apex downwards. Determine the least angle of the cone for stable
equilibrium.
5. A rectangular sluice gate AB, 2m wide and 4m long is hinged at A as shown in Fig 2. It
is kept closed by a weight fixed at the gate such that the combined weight of the gate
and the suspended weight W is 370 kN. Determine the depth of water h which will
just cause the gate to open if the centre of gravity of the gate is at G.

7. The end gates ABC of a lock gate are 8m high and when closed include an angle of
1200. Each gate of the 10m wide lock is supported by two hinges located at 1m and
5m above the bottom of the lock respectively as shown in Fig 4. The depths of water
on the two sides are 7m and 3m respectively. Determine: (i) the resultant water force
on each gate, (ii) the reaction between the gates AB and BC, and (iii) the force on each
hinge.
