Conditional Sentences: Conditionals
ZERO CONDITIONAL
The Zero Conditional: (if + present simple, ... present simple): If you heat water to 100 degrees,
it boils; If babies are hungry, they cry
This conditional is used when the result will always happen. So, if water reaches 100 degrees, it
always boils. It's a fact. I'm talking in general, not about one particular situation. The result of the
'if clause' is always the main clause.
FIRST CONDITIONAL
IF+ PRESENT SIMPLE, +WILL : If the weather is good, well go to the beach.
It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what
will happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.
-other modal verbs can replace will such as: can, may, should, must............:The flight may be
cancelled if the fog gets thick.
-IF can be replaced by time clauses like: when, before, after, while, unless, as soon as, as long as....
-Will can also be replaced by an imperative: if you see John, dont tell him my secret.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
IF + PAST SIMPLE, + WOULD : If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
-Its used to talk about a situation that is unreal or unlikely to happen
-After if, we use were instead of was for the first and third singular person
If I were rich , I would buy a big house.
-other modal verbs can replace would: could, might, may........
THIRD CONDITIONAL
IF + PAST PERFECT, + WOULD HAVE + P.P: If I had worked hard, I would have passed my exams.
-Its used to describe an imaginary event or situation in the past. It didnt happen or exist.
-other modal verbs can replace would have: might have, could have...........

IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE, SUJETO + WILL + ROOT OF THE VERB
SECOND: IF + SUBJECT + PAST SIMPLE, SUJETO + WOULD + ROOT OF THE VERB
THIRD: IF + SUBJECT + PAST PERFECT (pret. Pluscuamp subj) / SUBJECT + WOULD HAVE + PAST
PARTICIPLE (3rd column).
