Servant Approach to Leadership Case Study
I chose to discuss Case 10.2 Doctor to the Poor, because its main character Paul Farmer acted as a servant leader and inspired thousands of people in the medical world to become more altruistic. This case was also intruiging to me because although author Peter Northouse describes servant leadership as being a behavior that can be learned or strengthened, the main character of this case seemed to innately exhibit these qualities as traits and not behaviors. This case study introduces the reader to Paul Farmer who came from a humble background and who upon graduating from university moved to Haiti to assist a charity, which provided medical aid in rural areas. Farmer connected with the local Haitians and endeavored to meet their medical and personal needs. It was in Haiti that he was inspired to become a doctor and upon completing his schooling returned to the third-world country to create a public health system that addressed the basic needs of locals. After several years, through hard work, determination, and private funding he was able to grow his start up group into a widely respected organization that employs more than 11,000 people worldwide. At the core of Farmers nature was the drive to assist and increase the living and health standards of people in need all over the world. His servant leadership approach has impacted the lives of countless people and many would argue, has helped make the world a better place. This case served to highlight the extremely impactful nature an inspirational servant leader can have on those around. It also exists as a testament to the saying that one person can make a difference. I would use this leadership approach under the appropriate circumstances and on an as needed basis. Due to the fluid nature of this approach I would incorporate it alongside other leadership styles in order to inspire and encourage colleagues to work towards and achieve our common goals.
