Biman Bangladesh Airlines

Dear Valued Customer,

wcq mvwbZ MvnK,

Welcome to the 3rd edition of Bihanga. There is a lot happening

at Biman, so Im happy to present the highlights.
Firstly, we are gearing up for the sad farewell to our DC10s,
which have served Biman for over 30 years. With the arrival of
our new B777-300ERs, we will be donating one aircraft to the
famous Museum of Flight in Seattle. This will fly to Birmingham
(UK), probably in February, and then do a series of scenic
flights over Birmingham. You can join one of the flights.
Please check our website for details. The next day we will ferry
(without passengers) the last passenger DC10 flight in the
world to Seattle. To commemorate the event, a large number
of DC10 and F28 memorabilia will be on sale at Birmingham
Airport and with the UK post office, to have a commemorative
postage stamp on a last day cover.
Secondly, the arrival of the 2 brand new B777-300ERs, plus 2
leased B777-200ERs, will allow Biman to spread its wings; we
launch flights to New York, Birmingham, Frankfurt, Guangzhou
and Kunming. Many more new routes will follow.
Thirdly, we are launching an enhanced onboard product in
Business Class featuring elaborate catering, new overnight kits,
duty free and more personalized crew routines. Our economy
customers, can look forward to a new menu selection and
complimentary childrens toys.
We are delighted at the customer response for Biman Loyalty
Club. We already have thousands of members who earn
fantastic benefits such as free flights and upgrades. Please ask
your cabin crew for a free application and join up now! Were
committed to becoming an even more customer focussed,
World Class Airline. I welcome your feedback in the comment
forms provided by your cabin crew. Have a great flight!

Bihanga means
a bird in Bangla, and is often used in literary
writings. As Biman Bangladesh Airlines is being
reborn, reinvented, and soaring to new heights, we
felt this was the most symbolic name for Bimans
new inflight magazine, and so will our customers.

Farewell to DC10
It has been a great journey. One of the Bimans DC10s, which have served well over many years,
is being donated to one aircraft to an Aviation Museum in the USA. There has been a lot of
interest lately from press, aviation enthusiasts and the general public, on what will be happening
with Bimans last DC10s, which will be phased out. One of those DC10s will came to the end of
its economic life on November 10, 2013. The last DC10 continued normal flying until December
2013. Now, this will initially fly to Birmingham in the UK, probably in February, then do a series of
one hour scenic tours at Birmingham, for the aviation enthusiasts, before its final flight (of any
passenger DC10 in the world) to the USA. The event will be commemorated by having a large
number of DC10 and F28 memorabilia on sale at Birmingham Airport and Biman is working with
the UK post office for a commemorative postage stamp on a last day cover.

In-flight entertainment package

Biman is currently reviewing its in-flight entertainment

(IFE) package on all its aircraft. Offering a whole lot of
choices with more frequent updates, the various types
of IFE programmes will showcase Bimans new face of
improved quality and service. Some of the aircrafts do need hardware
upgrades to achieve this and therefore, changes may take a little
longer in such cases. But the loyal fliers with Biman are going to see
the significant improvements with time.

Marine Drive - Rare happy co-existence of hills and

sea made the Marine Drive from Kalatali to Teknaf
a spectacle. Nearly 5 km into the Marine Drive,
Himchhari is the most attractive and popular place of
all, with a waterfall in the hill close to the shore. To say
Heavenly may be a lesser description of the wide view
of the Bay of Bengal atop Himchhari hill of about 500 ft.
Inani - Another 25 km to the south, along the marine
drive, lies the beach of Inani, with the sea to the west in
the backdrop of high hills in the background. Hundreds
of crabs dance as a group like an animated red carpet.

township in the mainland Bangladesh,
welcomes you. It is separated from Myanmar by
the river Naaf. By road, however, its only 85 km
(2.5 hour journey from Coxs Bazar). Teknaf has
wide and long sandy beachs in the backdrop
of steep hills with green forests. The ride along
the crystal clear waters of Naaf is an enchanting
experience.
St. Martins Island - Check out the this solitary
coral island inside the immense blue, crystal
clear water of the Bay of Bengal just 9 km south
of the tip of Teknaf. A number of shipping liners
operate daily trips to the island besides regular
fishing boats.
The 8 sq. km small area of the island reduces
to just 5 sq. km during high tide. Just a day is
needed to walk throughto discover beaches,
coconut groves, coral stones, sea crabs,
turtle shells, oyster, snail, pearls, etc. The
southernmost part of the island gets cut off from
the body during high tide, which is why it is
called Chera Dwip (meaning torn off island).
Having all these diverse interests in a small
territory is no doubt extraordinarily jaw dropping
for its visitors.
If you are a serious traveller, only a week, let
alone a weekend, is not just good enough to
explore this beautiful place that will charm
you completely.

he moment you land up in

Singapore, the expanse of Changi
International Airport enthralls you.
The clean and towering buildings
ensure that your head remains
leaned backward as long as you try to immerse
yourself into this city.
Singapore attracts a lot of travellers from across
the globe. Chee Pey Chang, Executive Director,
South Asia, Middle East and Africa of Singapore
Tourism Board says that Singapores easy
connectivity, wealth of exciting experiences
and safe environment has traditionally made
the city a perennial favourite with travellers.
It is also true that with the attractions and
round-the-clock shopping options, to romantic
bespoke experiences and eclectic hangout spots,
Singapore has all that offers a memorable
holiday experience.

Very futuristic
Singapore is fast, busy and futuristic. It is the
financial nerve centre of Asia Pacific region.
Everything appears larger than life. Just like the
Singapore Flyer. Visible from a distance, it is the
worlds largest giant observation wheel. Chang
says, It gives a 360 degree panoramic view of
Singapore, from the fast-changing Marina Bay
that is transforming by the minute, to the islands
of Malaysia and Indonesia. It is the best point
to see and feel the vibrancy of the city. Besides
enjoying the 30-minute ride on the 165-metre tall
Singapore Flyer, check out the exciting mix of
specialty and lifestyle concept shops at the threestory Retail Terminal.
On the other hand, the Marina Bay Street Circuit,
also known as the Singapore GP Street Circuit,
is a street circuit around Singapores Marina Bay
and is the venue for the Singapore Grand Prix.

he night was cold and moonless.

Except for the distant stars,
the sole light source was the
dwindling campfire beside me.
And the only sound I could hear
was the ever-enchanting music of water
flowing over the uneven rocky bed which
was coming from the shallow creek running
some 20 feet away from me. I was still sitting
outside, drinking my tea and gazing upon
the countless stars. I stood up and reluctantly
motioned myself towards my tent, realising the
truth in Henry D. Thoreaus words, We can
never have enough of nature.
Four of my friends and I were out on the
Remakri creek and trekking along its beauty
overwhelmed our senses. The trek was
organised by an online based outdoor club
called Travellers of Bangladesh.

deep with sides abruptly rising upward creating

a steep wall of rock. So at these places there was
no other way to move ahead other than using a
raft. The rafts, crafted of bamboo by locals, would
already be there to navigate to the other side of
the ravine several hundred feet away.

Feeling the nature

Everyday our trek started early in the morning
after breakfast with noodles and dried fish and
ended with a sumptuous dinner cooked by
us. The scenery was nothing like one might
encounter in the big mountains. With green hills
all around and numerous springs and ample
spots to swim and dive, it felt like trekking in
paradise. Occasionally, we tried fishing with our
nets and hooks.
At the end of the trail, the surroundings were
changing rapidly. We saw wild cows, pigs and
wild deers. The thick forest was giving way to
cultivated land. The creek was getting wider and
at some places seemed more like a river. On the
last day, we came across two large and wonderful
waterfalls, among the largest ones in the
Bandarban hills. At around afternoon we reached
our destination, the mouth where the creek had
created the last waterfall called by its own name
Remakri, surrendering to Sangu river. Now the
cellular network coverage was available and we
could eat canned beverage and packed snacks.
We were back to our routine leaving behind a
soft adventure that was so relaxing to the soul.
I recalled the spectacular view and occasional
encounters with the local indigenous people who
lived in small scattered communities above the
hills. Their simple way of life was something that
we, the people from the modern and complicated
city life, could only be envious of.

this city

ome 5,000 year ago, or may be

even before that, wheels came into
existence for the mankind. Though,
in terms of a transportation tool it
was only apparent by the end of
the 19th century. Rickshaw is basically referred
to the tricycle used as a transport vehicle.
Many say that the Japanese were the first to
start using rickshaw. In fact, rickshaw comes
from the Japanese word - Jin riki sha - which
means man-powered vehicle. It is believed that
the Japanese emperor Meiji (1852-1912) used
rickshaw to pay a visit across his capital city.
Though that was a hand-pulled rickshaw. At
the end of 19th century (somewhere around
1870), hand-pulled rickshaw came into existence
in Japan. Alongside its popularity, the first
generation cycle rickshaw gathered momentum
in Singapore and Japan. In Japan, it was called
Rintaku. From there till early 20th century
(between 1920-30), cycle rickshaws gained
prominence in various Asian countries.

The rising popularity

Initially, rickshaw emerged as a vehicle for upper
class in Bangladesh. Its birthplace in Japan also
showcased the upmarket status as the emperor
used to ride on it with an exclusivity. In Bengal,
the first rickshaw started plying in Kolkata in the
early 20th century i.e., during 1930s; though only
the man-powered rickshaws were introduced
here. During the same time, rickshaws were
seen in Mymensingh and Narayanganj of
Bangladesh and later on in Dhaka (around 1938).
It is believed that in Sutrapur of Dhaka, a Bengali
Zamindar and a Marwari bought six rickshaws
from Kolkata to start rickshaws journey
in Dhaka.

Rickshaw and the art

The Indian subcontinent

has a rich history of textiles.
Amongst this regions finest are
the embroidered and woven
textiles of Bangladesh, the most
representative and renowned being its Kantha
the enchanted wrap and Jamdani the chef
doeuvre of the Dacca loom. Yet, no two craft
forms could be more different.
Kanthas were exclusive to rural women across
Bangladesh, who recycled old saris and dhotis,
drew freehand from folk tales and nature and
then embroidered them to create beautiful
articles for family and guests. Jamdanis,
however, were woven from the finest
handspun yarn, by male weavers based along
the rivers of Dhaka and its environs. They
were designed in formal classical patterns,
mainly of Persian origin. These high value
products were made exclusively for the royal
courts and world trade.

Beautiful craftsmanship
While Kantha craftswomens art was secular,
moving from religious epics to the world
around her, the Jamdani weavers were,
and continue to be, faithful to the precept
of Islamic non-iconic art, generally using
geometric and floral designs.
The exceptional beauty of Dhaka muslin was
recorded in numerous historical documents,
like Kautilyas Arthashastra and Abul Fazls
Ain i Akbari. Many factors contributed to
the superiority of Dhaka muslin and its
derivative, Jamdani. Rare high quality cotton,
fine handspun yarn and the matchless skill of
the weaver created the gossamer woven air
muslin. To this was added the spectacular
loom figured designs of Jamdani.
The British tried, but failed to grow this
special cotton elsewhere in their colonies. To
this day, the Jamdani weavers are deemed
as one of the finest in South Asia, weaving a
textile unique to Bangladesh.
Earlier, Kanthas generally had white
backgrounds reinforced by the ingenious use

The word festival is no longer

connoted with rituals and religious
sentiments only. The word has also
taken into its fold the fun element
that comes as a byproduct of the
so-called festivals and celebrations. Kite flying
that initially emerged as part of a leisure activity
for fun has taken a creative plunge with more
colours, fervour and fun moments. We list out
some festivals to look out for in 2014.

January 7-15, 2014
Gujarat, India
For the last 25 years, this annual international
kite festival is held by the Tourism Corporation
of Gujarat, India. On the occasion of Makar
Sankranti, the festival attracts a large number
of international kite flyers. Expert kite makers
and flyers bring their best collection here to
showcase their kite flying and fighting skills.

3D street art is all about imaginations and it instantly

till visual art has emerged

in myriad facets to attract
the attention of public.
But nothing has been as
overtly overwhelming
as 3D Street Art, which combines a
story with people who are observing
it. This art form connects people
instantly and along with photography,
it gives a newness altogether. One
of the popular artists-duo is Joe Hill
and Max Lowry, who have catapulted
this art into a new dimension. They
started this art form a decade back.
Hill informs, My friend Max Lowry
and I started experimenting with
anamorphic street art in the summer of
2004. We started small, chalking little
3D apples on the pavement outside
his house in Clapham, South London.
We then went on a tour of Spain,
where we were able to expand the
idea, creating 3D magnifying glasses,
subway stations and people emerging
from manholes. When we discovered
that people enjoyed interacting with
the work we moved from chalk to
paint so that you could jump about on
the pieces without rubbing it off and
ruining your clothes.

Breaking world records

In the world of 3D street art, the duo has broken
two world records. In November 2011, they made
the longest and largest pieces of 3D street art.
Hill narrates, It was an incredibly challenging
experience. We were painting in wet and windy
conditions and only had a few days to complete the
work. Fortunately, our friends and family helped
us finish it in time for Guiness World Records day.
Little did we know, the day before we were due
to complete the work, a couple of Chinese artists
had broken the record - their piece was larger than

Jetlag is often a problem, he admits and adds,

dealing with different weather conditions is always
interesting. The main challenge in this art form is
always to create something different that public will
enjoy interacting with.
The duo keeps on challenging themselves to come
up with newer ways of presenting their work.
Collaborating with clients and hearing their ideas
often brings about the best new ideas. Hill remarks,
The 3D street art seems to have captured peoples

A whole new generation is now adapting to the street
art and this can be seen in various parts of the globe.
The challenge will be to bring on innovation to take it
forward and make it even more interesting. Hill feels
that for those who wish to make this art form their
forte need to start small, keep experimenting and try
and think of it as sculpture rather than drawing. Only
that the understanding of the space as an object will
remain the key to mastering the process, he sums up.

pristine and fresh, and one can have it

that. It is also considered to be a powerful

diabetes. Scientists have found regular intake of
the increasingly popular vegetable keeps blood

High on oxygen

c P z i AwRb

Key scientific studies have revealed that Asparagus

scores high on respiration rate. It does not die
immediately as it gets picked. In fact, it continues to
breathe by engaging in metabolic activity i.e., intake
of oxygen. This in turn breaks down starch and
sugar to release carbon dioxide. When Asparagus
is compared with other vegetables, it shows very
high respiration rate (the speed at which the process
of oxygen intake occurs). It is placed at 60 mg of
carbon dioxide release per hour per 100 g of food

makes Asparagus more perishable than other

Amazing choices
Asparagus are basically young shoots of
a cultivated lily plant. Considered to be a
delicacy for the vegetarians, it compliments
non-vegetarian recipes as well. The intense
savoury flavour is quite distinct and adds
subtlety to food preparations. The young and
slender type, known as Sprue, are especially
preferred for salads. There is a wide range

purple in colour while the British and American
are green. The white ones are those which are
Spanish and Dutch. Irrespective of the colours,
all are nutritionally high on Vitamins A and C,
Potassium, Iron and Calcium.
So it is vital to have Asparagus in the menu
which would not only bring variety on to the
table but also a health element too.

Q. When did you realise the passion for

Cricket in you?
A. When Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy in
1997, I started thinking passionately about
taking cricket professionally.
Q. Your memories of ODI and Test debuts...
A. On my ODI debut, I was extremely nervous
when I faced the first ball. I don't think I have
gone through such a nerve-wracking moment
ever in my life. During the test match debut,
when the test cap was put on me, it was a
moment that still remains the most happiest and
memorable one in my life.

A. A great opportunity for young
talented players from all over
Bangladesh. This will certainly help

Bangladesh came here at the end of 2011. He
was impressed by the countrys tradition of
innovation and rich network of research centres,
which he believes, make this a fertile ground
for experimenting innovative approaches and
technologies.
UNICEF Takes key steps from water, sanitation,
health to education... all that require attention
for better future of the children. Villeneuve says,
With scientists, we devised a new system
whereby rain water can be collected during the

use. This way, we get not only cleaner and safer
water than other sources, but, it is also protected

In 1990, very few would have guessed that

Bangladesh would be able to achieve MDG 4
(Millennium Development Goal) i.e., reduced
child mortality. He adds, Even fewer would
have thought that it would do so before the
target date. Even more remarkable, Bangladesh
has the 4th most rapid rate of decline in child
mortality. A unique combination of leadership,
innovation and collective action allowed to
achieve so. Measles, dehydration are no longer
threatening life of young children.

Saving the children

In the process of urbanisation, rural population
base is shifting fast. Villeneuve says, this is
a natural trend towards urbanisation which
cannot simply be halted or reversed. This would
enable a rapidly growing slum population to
more effectively contribute to the acceleration of
economic growth and poverty reduction, instead

Learning & training

A 2010 UNICEF study highlighted the issues
affecting childrens lives and their well being.
It received little attention in the mainstream
media. Hence, the initiative titled Hello, a
partnership between online news provider
BDnews24 and UNICEF Bangladesh, is aimed
at giving opportunities for children by training
them as journalists, so that their views and
aspirations can find a place in the mainstream
media, Villeneuve explains.
According to him, the country is culturally
extremely rich. However, the situation of
adolescent girls at present mirrors that of
adult women. They deserve health, education
and economic opportunities as they remain
vulnerable to subjugation. According to him,
Bangladesh is a country ripe with possibility,
and while many opportunities for improvement
still exist, significant progress has been made
on child rights since independence in 1971.
UNICEF has played a crucial role in the story of
this young nation, and will continue to act as a
driving force for children, he sums up.

few steps can give us a healthy

living. This can be done by
incorporating better habits in
our daily pursuits. It is common
to presume that thinking about
healthy habits requires a lot of effort. But,
ironically, lifestyle changes can be brought about
with minimum effort. Rather than scaling big
steps, smaller ones play a key role in mitigating
challenges of our chaotic lifestyle. This can be
done slowly with each passing week, allowing you
to stick to the order for a longer duration.

Storing medicines correctly

You might wonder how this

change would help you to live a
healthy life. But this advice is one
of the most essential changes
one should adopt. If your pills and
medicines are kept anywhere then it is
exposed to various factors like light, heat or
humidity. Due to this, your
pill can get degraded and
lose its quality. To attain
the best out of your
medicines, store your
medicines in a dry and
dark location.

Little stretch in
the morning

Begin your day with light stretches. Early

morning stretches for even 10-15 minutes
will help you wake up instantly, help
you focus throughout the day, keep you
energised, improve flexibility, regulate
proper body circulation and improve coordination and
relaxation in your body.

A colourful plate

Whether it is red, yellow, blue or green,

add all colours of fruits and vegetables
to your plate. The more the colour the
better the health benefits you will derive.
You will ensure that you are filling up on
