How Did You Spend Your Time This Week? What Responsibilities Did You Have?

The student teacher spent the week observing classroom activities, taking on small responsibilities like leading students to specials and recess. They gave addition and subtraction tests and corrected papers. The most satisfying experience was helping a struggling student successfully spell the word "sport" by breaking it down into sounds. The student teacher anticipates their biggest challenge will be with time management and differentiating lessons once they begin teaching full lessons the following week on handwriting and fire safety.

Student Teacher Weekly Log
1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?
The past two weeks I have been observing and intervening when necessary such as giving
redirection and helping students individually. This week I started to take the students to
specials, recess and lunch by leading them down the hallway. During this time, I would ask
the students to line up and give direction on how to behave down the hallway and observe the
students while walking to the designated place. Along with this responsibility, I have also
given addition and subtraction time tests with individual students and corrected papers. So far
leading up to teaching independent lessons, I have begun to practice and take over the
smaller aspects of teaching in order to become a great teacher.
2. What were the most satisfying experiences? Greatest Challenge(s)?
In the past three weeks of student teaching, I have witnessed several experiences that were
fulfilling and satisfying. Since I do not go into teaching lessons till next week, the
experiences I have seen were from observation and working with a student individually. One
experience in particular that was fulfilling was working with a student independently. The
student is considered low in regards to reading and spelling and the student was struggling on
spelling a word in the story he was writing. The student called me over and said that he was
having trouble spelling the word sport. He had written down sht and was confused knowing
that is not how the word should look like. I got down to the students level and asked him
Well, what sounds do you hear when you say sport? The student began to say s,p,t and
asked them to write down those sounds. I told the student that all of those sounds and letters
are correct but we are missing two letters. I began to break down the word and pull the
sounds out and they were able to figure it out. The student erased what he previously wrote
and wrote the correct word while saying the sounds while writing it. Being able to work with
a student and help them succeed was a great feeling to have and such a fulfilling experience.
In regards to challenges, I havent experienced much. I assume I will have some
challenges when going into teaching my lessons when trying to differentiate my lessons to
where I can fit all the needs of my students. As stated in my observation phase report, I feel I
will have some challenges with time management in making sure I use the time allotted to its
full extent and try not to go over. As of now, I would say that would be a future challenge I
might have but in regards to the past three weeks, I have not had any challenges.
3. What are the plans for the upcoming week? Best times to observe?
Next week I will be teaching two lessons. One on handwriting and the other on fire safety.
On September 13th, (Tuesday) I will be teaching handwriting in regards to using end marks in
sentences. I will be teaching this lesson from 12:55-1:40 in our writing block. In regards to

the fire safety lesson, I will be teaching that on September 15th (Thursday) from 2:45-3:25 in
our social studies block. I am excited for this week to come and starting to get the experience
of teaching a full class on my own.
