Homework 01 Solution

This document contains the solution to a homework assignment on structural dynamics. It summarizes the free vibration response of an underdamped and critically damped system. For an underdamped system with mass of 5000 kg and spring constant of 20 MN/m, the natural frequency is calculated to be 63.25 r/s and period is 0.1 s. The free vibration response is given by an equation involving damped frequency, initial displacement and velocity. Graphs compare the response for damping ratios of 0 and 0.05. For a critically damped system, the response is given by a different equation involving initial conditions and damped frequency.

Given,
k = 20 MN/m = 20 106 N/m
m = 5000 kg
Therefore, Natural frequency,

Time period, T

b. Free vibration response

For underdamped system, free vibration response is given by,

v x0
x(t ) e- t x0 cos D t 0
sin D t
D

where,

D 1 2 represents damped frequency and x0 and v0 are initial displacement and velocity, respectively.
Given, x0 100 mm = 0.1 m and v0 0 m/s
Therefore,

x(t ) e- (63.246)t 0.1cos 63.246 1- 2 t

sin 63.246 1- 2 t

The free vibration responses evaluated using above formula, for the damping ratios = 0.0,
= 0.05 are compared in the figure below.

The responses are plotted for 0 to 6 seconds with t = 0.01 s .

2. Critically damped system
The response is given by the following expression
x(t ) x0 (1 t ) v0t et

The free vibration response evaluated using above formula is also shown in figure below.
