Testing Materials Final Assessment Task

The student must build a bridge structure out of appropriate materials to help their favorite Inside Out character cross a river and get home safely. The structure will be tested to ensure it holds at least 1000 grams, stays together when shaken, uses joints to hold the structure, and is visually appealing. The student must draw diagrams of their planned structure, list required materials, and outline the construction procedure. They will have three 30-minute classes to complete the project. The assessment checklist evaluates if the structure meets the strength, stability, material, and design requirements.

you to build him or her a safe and stable bridge
structure that can help him or her cross the
river to get home.
Your structure will be tested and marked as
follows:
Holds 1000 grams
When it is shook it stays together
Is visually appealing
The joints hold the structure together
Appropriate materials are used to create a
stable structure
Please draw a diagram of the structure you
plan to create and make a list of the materials
you will need using the handout provided to
you. Then, write down the procedure you will
take to create your structure. Remember you
will only have three 30-minute classes to
create your structure.

Outcomes Assessed:

3-8 Evaluate the suitability of different materials and designs for their use in a
building task.
Specific Learner Expectations

Students will:
1. Recognize that functional structures must be sufficiently strong and stable and
that unstable or weak structures are often unsafe to use.
2. Compare and evaluate the strength and stability of different models or objects
constructed.
3. Describe the distinctive properties of some common solids, such as wood,
paper or plastic, that make them suitable for use as building materials.
4. Apply procedures to test the strength of construction materials, in particular,
different stocks of papers, plastics or wood.
5. Apply procedures to test different designs.
6. Apply procedures to test the strength of different methods of joining.
