Specific Goal: My audience will learn more about Restless Leg Syndrome and how it is
diagnosed.
Application: The audience will learn symptoms of RLS and that it is now a recognized disease.
Ethos: Primary Ethos I have RLS and have tried everything to help the symptoms.
Secondary Ethos: I will have one references in my speech.
Pathos: Having RLS will bring sympathy for my topic.
Logos: I used medical data on RLS and research for treating symptoms and diagnosis.
Audience Assessment: My audience may not know what RLS is and may not know that it is a
diagnosed disease.
Adaptation to Audience: I will define medical terminology in a way the audience will
understand.
Pattern of Organization: Chronological in the introduction, Topical in the Body.
Introduction
I. Hook: Restless Leg Syndrome is a real disease
A. I have had RLS since I was a teenager
B. The cause of RLS is unknown, however scientist believe it has to so with low levels
of dopamine in the brain.
II. Thesis: Knowing the symptoms of RLS may help you lead a better life.
III. Preview: I will share what I have learned about RLS.
A. First, I will explain what RLS is.
B. Second, Ill define two different types of RLS.
C. Third, I will describe the symptoms.
Transition: Now that I have given a preview, this is Restless Leg Syndrome.
Body
I. Restless Leg Syndrome may be caused by a Dopamine imbalance. 2016 University of Maryland

A. Periodic Limb Movement Disorder is where leg muscles jerk every 20 to 40 seconds

C. 4 out of 5 people with RLS also have PLMD (Periodic Limp Movement Disorder) 2016

Transition: Now that you know two different types of RLS lets look at the symptoms that I have.
IV. RLS can cause sleep disorders.
A. When I am relaxed and getting ready to fall asleep I have an uncontrollable urge to move
my legs keeping me awake.
B. It is impossible to fall asleep when you cant stop thinking about moving your legs.
1. I have no slept for 3 days because of RLS.
2. I went into preterm labor because of my RLS and lack of sleep.
Conclusion
V. Restless Leg Syndrome is a disease that is not well known. It often goes undiagnosed,
because of the unknown cause.
VI. If you cant sleep because of an extreme urge to move your legs, see your doctor and get
treatment.
