Admissions Policies
MBA admissions policies support the Broad College of Business philosophy
of management development by admitting academically strong candidates
who demonstrate leadership potential. In addition, we seek to ensure
diversity in educational, experiential, and cultural backgrounds of the
members of each MBA class. Each applicants potential is evaluated using
the following criteria:
Management potential as demonstrated by work experience, particularly
full-time employment after earning a bachelors degree.
Academic record, including areas of academic strength and trends in
scholastic performance. Applicants must hold a bachelors degree from a
recognized college or university. We welcome applications from
graduates of all fields of study- liberal arts, engineering, social sciences,
physical sciences, and others.
General aptitude for graduate work in business as measured on the
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record
Exam (GRE). Other indicators of academic success may be considered,
including attainment of an earned doctoral or master's degree and strong
breadth/depth of managerially progressive career experience for
Executive MBA applicants.
Background, development, growth potential, and leadership as indicated
by employment history, record of activities and community service, and
recommendations.
Maturity, motivation, and ability to contribute to and benefit from the
learning environment as indicated by your essays and a personal
resume.
We ask that you provide us your social security number on the application.
It is used for identification purposes only. Information regarding your ethnic
and racial status is optional and provides statistical data for the University.

Applicant Instructions
A complete application packet is required by all MBA programs before an
Admissions Committee review.
Please read the entire application and review all instructions before you
begin completing each form. Use your correct legal name. If your name,
address or employer should change prior to enrollment at the University,
please notify the appropriate MBA program office.
Applicants are responsible for submitting all documents described in the
completed application packet. To enroll in a Broad MBA program, applicants
recommended for admission will be required to submit a commitment form
notifying the MBA office of their intention to begin the program and a nonrefundable tuition deposit.

Applicant Packet
A complete application packet should contain the following:
Application Fee. A non-refundable $85.00 fee must accompany the
application materials. The fee must be in the form of a personal check,
cashiers check, or money order in US dollars drawn on a US bank, and

made payable to Michigan State University. You may also pay your
application fee online with your Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American
Express credit card. Applications received without the fee will not be
processed.
Application for Admission. Provide all requested information and
complete all sections.
Essay Questions. Provide thoughtful responses to the questions.
Answer each question on a separate page headed with your name and
identification of the question being answered and upload to the specified
area. Full-Time MBA applicants are required to complete a video essay
for Essay question two (follow the instructions provided).
Resume.
Upload a professional resume, listing the scope of
responsibilities for each position held.
Official Transcripts. One official transcript is required from each college
or university, undergraduate and graduate, where you earned a degree.
Please forward your transcripts in sealed envelopes (including mark
sheets or diplomas for international degrees) to the appropriate Broad
MBA program using the contact information on the front page of the
instructions. Transcripts should be sent directly from the degree-granting
institution. If you attended Michigan State University, the MBA office will
request transcripts for you at no charge.
To expedite the review of your application, you may upload your unofficial
transcripts to your application. This does not replace the requirement to
send official transcripts to the Broad MBA program. (note: The Full-Time
MBA program will accept uploaded scanned copies of your
academic records when you apply. If you get admitted to the FullTime MBA program, we will then require all original documents to be
sent to the Full-Time MBA program office).
Two References. The reference form should be completed by individuals
who can provide specific information on your professional and intellectual
skills and abilities.
Employment related references are strongly
encouraged. Note for Full-Time MBA Applicants - All candidates are
required to fill in the names and contact information of their
recommenders. However, if you are applying to the Full-Time MBA
program, your recommender does not need to fill out the
recommendation form. If your recommender chooses to fill out the
recommendation form, we will still accept it. Filling out the
recommendation form by a recommender is OPTIONAL. The Full-Time
MBA program office may call your recommenders to speak to them
during the application cycle. Please inform your recommenders to expect
a call from The Michigan State University Full-Time MBA program during
the application cycle (not all recommenders will be contacted).
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) Score. Arrange for
your score to be reported directly to the Michigan State University Broad
MBA program of your choice by providing the appropriate code below
when taking your exam:

If you are a permanent resident or have a work visa, please upload a
copy (both sides) of your permanent immigrant visa card (green card) or
work visa to the appropriate section of the Broad MBA online application.

Information for International Students

(including anyone with a degree from a non-U.S. institution)
International applicants must meet particular conditions for transcripts of
academic work, English language requirements, and financial resources
certification for the Broad MBA programs.
Please arrange for ONE official/certified/attested university or professional
school records of subjects and mark sheets, transcripts, diplomas, and/or
degree certificates to be sent to Michigan Universitys Broad College of
Business from the principal or registrar of each school you have attended,
or by the Ministry of Education in your country in a sealed envelope. The
names of all certificates, diplomas, degrees earned, and dates received
should be noted. Photocopies or notarized copies are not acceptable.
Official translations must be furnished when originals are not in English. You
must provide transcripts. Please note this process could take several
months, so please plan accordingly.

Information for applicants from China:

The Office of Admissions is recommending all applicants pursuing or who
have earned degrees from universities in China submit not only transcripts
and graduation certificates from China, but also obtain verification of
these documents from the China Academic Degrees and Graduate
Education Development Center (CDGDC).
How the process works: after you send copies of your documents to the
CDGDC along with payment, CDGDC verifies grades and degrees
(depending on what is requested) by accessing national and provincial data
bases and contacting universities directly. CDGDC then sends via courier
service directly to the U.S. University stamped copies of the verified
documents along with a statement noting in English what the degree is and
whether the university and program is recognized by the Chinese Ministry of
Education. The student pays approximately $40 dollars for this service. For

Note The Full-Time MBA program will accept uploaded scanned
copies of your academic records when you apply. If you are admitted
to the Full-Time MBA program, we will then require all original
documents to be sent to the Full-Time MBA program office.
English Language Proficiency Requirements
The ability to understand and communicate English well is essential for all
students in Broad MBA programs. Therefore, proficiency in reading, writing,
and speaking English are necessary. Strong English language skills must
be acquired prior to the beginning of classes.
The English competency tests (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE A, etc.) are designed to
give graduate program admissions committees information to judge
potential for success. A reasonable level of English competency (reading,
listening, speaking, and writing) are important skills for success in the
nationally-competitive MSU graduate education environment. Applicants

without native fluency in English must fulfill proficiency requirements as part

of their admission to the Broad College.
The Broad College requires applicants to provide either a Test of English as
a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, International language Testing System
(IELTS) score, or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A) score. The
Admissions Committee will consider a candidate's highest total score (and
the sections associated with the highest score total). For more information

Test takers should use the Michigan State University institution code of
1465. In addition, please use 02 (zero two) for the department code. Using
02 will send your TOEFL results directly to the Broad Graduate School of
Management.
Note MSU does not accept the Institutional TOEFLa test taken at
any site other than an official testing center and not scored by the
TOEFL Administration.

English Language Proficiency Waiver Policy:

The English language proficiency requirement may be waived for students
with A bachelors degree that is earned 100% in the U.S., as long as the
candidates old English language competency scores are included. The
BA or BS program should be a regular 4-year degree where the majority
of the degree is earned in the U.S., not 100% online, and not an
experiential degree (where credits are given for life experiences).
A bachelors degree earned at MSU, the majority of credits earned while
on campus and English language competency scores are included (even
if old) for the candidates admission into the bachelors program.
A Masters degree earned at an AAU institution (the 62 largest research
universities in the U.S.) on a U.S. campus. English language competency
scores are included (even if old) for the candidates admission into the
masters program.
MBA applicants with at least 3 years of US-based, English-speaking FullTime work experience.
In most cases, candidates who are citizens from the following countries
may also request a waiver. However, language of instruction at the
institution where the candidate received their bachelors degree must be
in English.
Anguilla, Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British
Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Caribbean, Cayman Islands,
Dominica, Greenland, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, Micronesia,
Federal State of Micronesia, Montserrat, New Zealand, St. Kitts & Nevis, St.
Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad, Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, United
Kingdom - England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Applicants to the Full-Time MBA program who have completed their
schooling with the medium of instruction in English can ask for a waiver.
To be eligible for this waiver, you must have completed your High School
and college with English as a medium of Instruction and have taken the
GMAT or GRE standardized test and have completed a face-to-face
interview with a MBA representative (interviews are offered only after you
have applied to the program and are shortlisted).

Process to ask for a Waiver:

Applicants must ask for the waiver (not automatic). Submit a paragraph in
your optional essay about academic background proving medium of
instruction was English. Acceptable proof:- copy of transcripts/diplomas
that specify English as a medium of instruction or letter from the
institution certifying that the medium of instruction was English.
Meet the requirements of the GMAT AWA scores equal to or greater than
4.0 on a scale of 0-6.
Complete the Interview requirements specified by the MBA Program.
Note Any student falling under this waiver practice who will be a
teaching assistant at MSU must still pass the SPEAK test. The Broad
College of Business will not make any exceptions to the policy listed
on this page.
