Field Experience Assignment #1
1.
( Observe and record)
Staff that are assigned to monitoring duties before school wear a royal blue uniform
school shirt to stand out. It is easy to look across a large common area and see the blue
shirts. Students seemed to behave well in transition time. There is little tolerance for
disruption from students in halls and common areas. There is so little time between
classes that behavior issues are less common than I would have expected. I had very little
interaction with specialists, but I visited the library, health office, and principals office. I
also visited the cafeteria, which serves free breakfast to any student that wishes to eat. I
visited the deans and attendance office where truancy and discipline are managed.

a. Reg 5145 children may be released to a custodial (a parent or legal guardian), a law
enforcement officer, or a child welfare officer. The child may not be released to any
other adult including a non-custodial parent, unless permission is given by custodial
parent.
b. Reg 6112 Fire drills shall be conducted at least once each month under supervision
of Chief of Fire Department. Escape diagrams must be approved by chief and posted
in every classroom.
c. Reg 6112 No specific shelter in place procedures are posted, only that each
principal is to develop a plan for staff (under guidelines established by the district) in
emergencies.
d. Reg 5150 Well stocked emergency first-aid kits must be readily available to all
staff.
e. A student is not to be sent home without school personnel first establishing the
availability of adequate supervision in the home- last year I was compelled to come
pick up my child after he fell and hit his head we were extremely unavailable at the
time. I asked if it was serious enough to require that I hurry and come get him, why
did they not call EMS. They said that it was because it was not that serious. I said for
them to keep him until I could get there in 90 minutes. They demanded that I come
immediately so I can take him to the doctor. This policy is good, as long as the school
nurses office follows it.
3.
a. The school has a band, an orchestra, and choir with performances about three times
each year. There also are basketball teams for boys and girls. Some clubs operated
before and after school like NJHS, a robotics club, a science club, tennis club,
computer club, and a game club.
b. I know of no existing business partnerships, except for an In-n-Out good grades
reward program.
c. There is not a PTA organization, but parent information meetings that discuss various
volunteer opportunities occur at the start of the school year.
