Prelude No 1

Heitor Villa Lobos

Villa Lobos was a Brazilian composer, described as "the single most


significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music".
The piece presents the melody primarily in the bass. A device borrowed from
cello music by playing the melody in the bass register. This piece often
repeats section, either exactly or almost, leading the player to vary tone
colour. Tempo or pulse is varied in order to gain a dramatic effect. Highly
rhythmic sections reflect the Spanish and Latin American styles.

Dengouso by parnambuco
(1983-1947)
Joo Pernambuco, was born in Jatob, Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil of an Indian
(Caet) mother and Portuguese father. Joo Pernambuco was an important composer of
choros, and also of jongos, valses, toadas, and canes. However his illiteracy left him in
the hands of unscrupulous partners who robbed several important compositions of his.
Being one of Brazils chro pioneers at that time he has left music
such Sons de Carilhes (Sound of Bells) Dengouso that are very popular
among guitarist throughout the world.

Verano Porteo

Astor Piazzolla

(1921-1992)

stor Pantalen Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon


player and arranger. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a

new style termed nuevo tango incorporating elements from jazz and classical
music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own
compositions with a variety of ensembles.
In 1992, American music critic Stephen Holden described Piazzolla as "the
world's foremost composer of tango music
Verano Porteo is a tango composed by Astor Piazzolla in 1965,
originally as incidental music for the play 'Melenita de Oro' by Alberto
Rodrguez Muoz. Later this became part four movement suite which
represents seasons of the year. This piece represents summer. His style mix
style in tradition and innovation shows why the tango was so different from
the traditional Argentine tango. In this song alternate parts very rhythmic
and the rest of the music captures calm and reflective character. Verano
Porteo was played on guitar by guitar virtuoso John Williams
Caprico Arabe
As a composer Trrega was conservative, his style was similar to the general
trends in the second half of the 19th century. A virtuoso on his instrument,
he was known as the "Sarasate of the guitar".
Capricho Arabe serenade, recalls the romance of nightfall in Andalucia. With the dominating
minor key setting the mood of the piece, Tarrega pays homage to the Moorish influences he
encountered in that part of the country, while the middle passage in F major, almost playful in
contrast with the minor key. Maestro guitarist Andres Segovia often played this to end his
concerts.

Danza del Altiplano Leo Brouwer


Leo Brouwer is a Cuban guitarist/composer/conductor who started playing
the guitar at the age of 13, giving his first performance at 17.He was initially
drawn to the guitar by flamenco music and encouraged by his father, a
doctor, and amateur guitarist. Brouwer naturally embodies his own Cuban background
and has the Afro-Cuban folk influence and rhythmic style to all of his music compositions.
However this was more evident in his early compositions.
'Danza del Altiplano' It is an atmospheric arrangement of a Peruvian folk

song. This is the only solo piece included in well renowned guitarist Robin
Hill's CD titled Eklectica.

Sun Burst Andrew York


Study no 9 op 6 by Fernando sor
FERNANDO SOR (17781839) is considered by many to be the finest
guitaristcomposer of the early nineteenth century. Trained in music as a
young man at the monastery at Montserrat, he subsequently composed not
only a large body of concert music for the guitar but also piano music, songs,
music for the ballet, a symphony, a violin concerto and an opera.
Sors Op. 6, Twelve Studies for the Spanish Guitar where he dedicated this to
his Pupils, Op. 6 was first published in London around 1815. Sor did not
provide fingerings or expressions markings for these pieces.
Mallorca by Isaac Albeniz
1860 18 May 1909

Isaac Albniz was a Spanish pianist and composer best known for his piano
works based on folk music idioms. Transcriptions of many of his pieces, such
as Asturias (Leyenda), Granada, Sevilla, Cadiz, Crdoba, Catalua, and the
Tango in D, are important pieces for classical guitar, though he never
composed for the guitar.
Mallorca, Op 202 or Majorca is one of the most popular transcriptions for
classical guitar. It has been played and recorded by guitarists such as Julian
Bream and John Williams and many others. This piece portrays a
mysterious, beautiful island with a Moorish influence.

Guitarist and composer Andrew York is a Grammy wining Guitarist.


Sunburst is one of better works from him. This work is in D major and the
sixth string and first string tuned down to D. At the beginning of the piece it
is 4/4 and at the end its moves to 3/4 time.In the middle of the passage it
uses slur techniques with chord accompany which features a modern style.
