This lesson plan is for a Grade 4 science class on drive systems and gear systems. The lesson will involve students building and examining simple gear systems using various materials provided. Students will work in groups to construct three different gear combinations and record their observations on how different sized gears affect the movement and speed of one another. They will then participate in a class discussion and activity reviewing their findings. Finally, students will engage in a competitive sponge activity to challenge their understanding of creating effective gear systems.

Lesson Plan

Name: Brayden Gill

Grade/Subject: Grade 4 Science
Unit: Drive Systems
Topic: Who Drives Who?
Date: Nov. 29, 2016
Length of Lesson: 60 min.
General Learning Construct devices that use wheels and axles, and demonstrate their use in gear systems
Outcomes (P.O.S.) Construct and explain the operation of a drive system that uses cogs or gears
Specific Leaning
Working gear system
Outcomes (P.O.S.)
Learning
Students will
Objectives
1. Build and examine the workings of a simple gear systems (gears)

Push Pins
Master #14 X22

Open Prezi

(10 min.)

Review
-Discuss what a gear system is
Gears are a set of toothed wheels that work together to change the
speed of a driving mechanism

Assessment Methods
(formative) students
complete questions
correctly

-Why do you think gears have teeth?

Gears have teeth to prevent slippage by ensuring better grip
-How does turning the larger gear effect the smaller gear?
Turning the larger gear causes the smaller gear to turn faster.
The larger gear will be harder to turn, but the smaller gear will rotate
more times and will rotate faster.
This is called Gearing Up
-How does turning the smaller gear effect the larger gear?
Turning the smaller gear causes the larger gear to turn more slowly.
The smaller gear will be easier to turn but the larger gear will not rotate
as many times.
This is called Gearing Down
Body of Lesson

Partner Activity

(30 min.)

-Form groups of 4
-Each person gets a sheet to record findings
-You must make three different gear combinations
EXAMPLE- Use the smallest gear as the driver or change the
order of the gears
-Record on assignment the direction that gears move and the
which gears move faster and which gears move slower than the
drive wheel
Findings/ Problems
(10 min)

Prezi Notes

(formative) are
students participating
in discussion

(formative) students
recognize importance
of gear system
(formative) Identify
how a gear system
affects driven and
driver wheels

Closure (10 min.)

Assignment Review of Gears

Class answers on their own
Answers put up on slide after

Sponge Activity

Group Competition (get two groups to pair up to make a group of

four)
#1 Try to create a gear system with as many gears as possible that
still turns effectively
#2 Try to build the longest gear system that still turns effectively
