Push Mo Yan Friend: Inverse Functions

Four friends were on a trip when their car broke down. The distance the car can be pushed is determined by the function f(x) = 3x - 5, where x is the force in Newtons exerted by each person pushing. The questions ask: 1) If two people push with 1N each, how far will the car go? 2) If four people push with 2N each, how far will it go? 3) How much force is needed if four people push the car 43m to the mechanic? 4) Does pushing with the inverse function and four people at 2N each go farther than question 2?

Push Mo Yan Friend

Inverse Functions
Directions: Read the situation carefully and solve for what is asked.
You and four (4) of your friends were on a trip when your car broke down. For the car to start again,
it has to be pushed. The distance (in meters) the car covers when you push it is determined by the
function() = 3 5, where is the force one (1) person exerts in pushing, measured in Newton
(N).
Answer the following questions:
1. If two (2) of you exert 1N each, how far will the car go?
2. If four (4) of you exert 2N each, how far will the car go?
3. The mechanic shop is 43m away. How much force should each of you exert if four (4) of
you are pushing?
4. Solve for the inverse of the function. Using this function, with as the force exerted by one
(1) person, if four (4) of you exert 2N each, will it go farther than the result in #2?
