MA241 F16 FinalExam Formula Sheet

The document provides formulas and probability tables for various statistical methods and distributions that may appear on a final exam for a statistics course. It defines probability mass functions and expected values for several discrete random variables including the Bernoulli, binomial, Poisson, geometric, and negative binomial distributions. It also provides formulas and definitions for continuous uniform and normal distributions. The document lists formulas and procedures for statistical inference including confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for population means and proportions. It concludes by providing tables of standard normal and Student's t-distributions.

MA241 STATISTICAL METHODS FOR THE LIFE SCIENCES

FINAL EXAMINATION FORMULA SHEET

2016 FALL TERM
1. Random variables (discrete and continuous)
(1). (Bernoulli Random Variable) Suppose that a trial, or an experiment, whose outcome can be
classified as either a success or a failure is performed. If let X = 1 when the outcome is a
success and X = 0 when it is a failure, the the probability mass function of X is given by
p(0) = 1

p and p(1) = p

where 0 p 1, is the probability that the trial is a success. E(X) = p and V ar(X) =
p(1 p).
(2). (Binomial Random Variable) Suppose that n independent trials, each of which results in a
success with probability p and in a failure with probability 1 p, are to be performed. If X
represents the number of successes that occur in the n trials, then X has the below probability
mass function with parameters (n, p),

n x
p(x) =
p (1 p)n x , x = 0, 1, 2, . . . , n
x
Therefore, E(X) = np and V ar(X) = np(1

p).

(3). (Poisson Random Variable) A random variable X that counts number of a certain event
occurring in a unit of measurement is called poisson random variable. X takes on one of the
values 0, 1, 2, . . . has the below probability mass function with parameter > 0,
x

p(x) = e
Therefore, E(X) =

x!

, x = 0, 1, 2, 3, . . .

and V ar(X) = .

(4). (Geometric Random Variable) Suppose that independent trials, each having a probability p,
0 < p < 1, of being a success, are performed until a success occurs. Let X equal the number
of trials required , then X has the below probability mass function with parameters p,
p(x) = (1
Therefore, E(X) =

1
p

and V ar(X) =

p)x 1 p , x = 1, 2, . . .

1 p
.
p2

(5). (Negative Binomial Random Variable) Suppose that independent trials, each having probability p, 0 < p < 1, of being a success are performed until a total of r successes is accumulated.
Let X equal the number of trials required, then X has the below probability mass function
with parameters (r, p)

x 1 r
p(x) =
p (1 p)x r , x = r, r + 1, . . .
r 1
Therefore, E(X) =

r
p

and V ar(X) =

r(1 p)
.
p2

(6). (Uniform Random Variable) A random variable that has probability density function defined
as below is called uniform random variable f (x) = b 1 a for a x b. Therefore, E(X) = a+b
2
and V ar(X) =

(b a)2
.
12

(7). (Regular Normal Random Variable) A random variable that has probability density function
defined as below is called normal random variable f (x) =
Therefore, E(X) = and V ar(X) = 2 .

p1

(x )2
2 2

, for

1 < x < 1.

(8). (Standard Normal Random Variable) A standard normal random variable is a special case of
a regular normal random variable with = 0 and = 1.
2. Probability
(1). P (A [ B) = P (A) + P (B) if A, B are mutually exclusive
(2). P (A [ B) = P (A) + P (B)

P (A \ B) if A, B are not mutually exclusive

(3). P (A \ B) = P (A)P (B) if A, B are independent events

(4). P (A|B) =

P (A\B)
P (B)

(5). P (Ac ) = 1

P (A) rule of complement
