Hazardous Area Classification

The document defines hazardous area zones, gas groups, temperature classes, and electrical protection types for explosive environments according to IEC standards. Zone 0 refers to an area with an explosive gas atmosphere present continuously. Zone 1 is an area where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation. Zone 2 is an area where an explosive atmosphere is not likely but possible. Gas groups define the type of gas, such as methane or hydrogen. Temperature classes specify the auto-ignition temperature of a gas or vapor. Electrical protection types indicate equipment certified for different zones, such as flameproof enclosures for Zone 1 or 2 areas.

Zone of Hazardous Area

Description as per IEC 60079-10

Zone 0

an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is

present continuously or for long periods or
frequently

Zone 1

an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is

likely to occur in normal operation
occasionally

Zone 2

area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not

likely to occur in normal operation but, if it
does occur, will persist for a short period only

Non Hazardous Area

an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is

not expected to be present in quantities
such as to require special precautions for the
construction, installation and use of equipment

Gas Group

Description as per IEC 60079-20

equipment for mines susceptible to firedamp

equipment for places with an explosive gas atmosphere other than mines
susceptible to firedamp
