9. Listen and read. Do you think its better to live in Cairns or Sydney? (1.8)
Australia is a big country with a small population. There are only
five countries bigger tan Australia in the world but the
population is smaller tan Spains. There are more kangaroos
than people!
The population isnt very big because a lot of the land in
Australia is desert and rainforest and its difficult to live in those
places. About 60% of the population lives in towns or cities on the
coast because the life is easier and healthier than in the inland towns.
Most of the bigger cities, such as Melbourne and
Sydney, are in the south and south east of Australia.
They are busier and more exciting than the cities in
other areas and the climate is better.
The north is usually hotter and drier than the south.
Cities, like Cairns, are quieter and more relaxed.
People can visit the Great Barrier Reef, a huge coral
reef, near the north-east coast, and the rainforests, with
amazing tres and plants.

Wednesday
I flew to London today with my friend John!
Thursday
I saw the Tower of London today. Its a really big castle and it took a
long time to walk around it! A building in the Tower of London is
called the Bloody Tower because this is where the kings and
queens of England chopped off their enemies heads. The guards of
the Tower are called Beefeaters! In the old days the people of
London were often hungry. But the King gave his guards lot of food,
so londoners called the guards Beefeaters. We saw a knights
armor and lots of swords. The armor was very small. The people
were very short in those days.
Friday
I wrote a postcard to Mom. I also got some socks as a gift for my
cousin. They have pictures of Beefeaters on them!

7. Read. What do these animals steal?
Some people consider squirrels to be cute and harmless, but to
gardeners, they are public enemy N1. Squirrels are very intelligent
and persistent animals. When you combine these qualities with a
hungry belly and a tendency to live alongside humans, there can be a
good bit of conflict between squirrels and homeowners over flowers,
vegetables and fruit trees.
In one of the most bold examples of theft in the animal kingdom,
hyenas are capable of driving a lion away from its kill. It travels in
groups of up to 80 individuals and when it comes upon a larger
carnivore it swoops in to steal the meat with the help of its clan.
Hyenas often hunt collectively, which means stealing is no problem.
Known as the pirates of the seashore, gulls are naturally aggressive
and competitive birds. They steal food from each other, other bird
species or even sea otters if given the opportunity. Because gulls
cannot dive for fish, they must steal from those species.
21
Monkey Thieves
In India people believe that some animals are special. Monkeys are special and so
theyre free to go where they want. Theyre very happy. Monkeys live in trees and eat
fruits and leaves. People often feed them.
These monkeys are also thieves! They steal pieces of food. People think theyre funny.
But the monkeys also steal other things. When they see cameras or bags on a seat,
they often take them. They put them in trees or throw them on the ground. Then
people are angry.

Look at the picture! Its adust mite. Its very small, you can olsy see/hear it
with a microscope. In one gram/kilo of dust you can find about one
hundred/thousand dust mites.
Dust mites like warm places, so many of them live in beds/ice. There can be
as many as ten million/thousand in a bed. Dust mites eat the dead skin of
people. Each person loses around twenty tonnes/kilos of dead skin in a
lifetime, so dust mites find lots of food in beds. Some people get asthma/
colds from dust mites so they have to wash their sheets in very hot water.

Crocodiles are 250 million years old! The largest crocodiles are saltwater crocodiles.
Theyre about 5 meters long and weigh about 450 kilos.
Crocodiles lay between 20 and 90 eggs but only around 5 survive. The baby
crocodiles break out of the eggs with a very useful tooth on the front of their nose!
Mother crocodiles are very careful with their babies and they carry them from the
eggs to the water in their mouth. The babies are very playful and usually harmless
but a bite from their teeth can be painful.
Crocodiles can live for 70 years but some people kill them to make shoes and bags
from their skin. There are now about 300,000 saltwater crocodiles in the world
