What role does language have in how we come to know?

Is it possible to know without language?
What is language? Is it different than communication?
What are the advantages and limitations of language?
Is our capacity for language learned or innate?
What is the relationship between language, culture and knowledge?
How can the philosophy of language change the way we think of ourselves and
of reality?
How has the field of linguistics and semiotics contributed to what we now call
postmodern.

Other notes:

This is the longest unit in year one. I use this unit to do much more than simply
discuss the role of language in knowledge acquisition. First I use it to discuss the
significance of the era or zeitgeist. The influence of semiotics and linguistics on
philosophy is explored as a significant factor in ushering the postmodern era.
Second I use it to discuss the relationships between all the ways of knowing.
This culminates in the students final assignment which is a presentation on how
one of the major ways of knowing links to the others. This assignment is meant
to seriously introduce the TOK IA.
