Guide to Reference Photographs for
Steel Surfaces Prepared by
Dry Abrasive Blast Cleanfng
1. Scope
Ths guide describes the use of refe1ence photographs
depicting the appearance of both previously unpainted and
previously painted and partially rusted hotrolled carbon steel
prior to and after abrasiva blast cleaning. These photographs
are intended to be used to supplement the written SSPC/NACE
lnternational blast cleaning surface preparaton standards. The
written standards are the primary means to determine con
formance with blast cleaning requirements. The photographs
shall not be used as a substitute for the written standards (see
Note 7.1 ).
2. Description
The reference photographs consist of a series of 1:1 (ac
tual size) color photographs that represent various condilions
of unpainted and painted steel surfaces prior to and after surface preparation by abrasiva blast cleaning. The photographs
were taken under controlled studio lighting designad to show
the maximum detail possible.
3. Referenced Standards
3.1 SSPC ANO NACE INTERNATIONAL JOINT
STANDARDS:
SP 5/NACE No. 1
SP 6/NACE No. 3
SP 7/NACE No. 4
SP 10/NACE No. 2
SP 14/NACE No.8
4. Conditions Depicted
4.1 These reference photographs illustrate five initial rust
condtions before surtace preparation, covaring the ranga from
intact mill scale to rusted and pitted steel. as well as previously
painted steal.' Tha rust conditons are:
Condltlon A: Steel surface complately covered with ad
herent mill scale; little or no rust visible.
Condltlon B: Steel surface covered with both mili scale
and rust.

4.2 These reference photographs illustrate surfaces prepared by abrasive blast cleanng using silica sand with the
exception of those in Appendix A (see Section 4.3).
The various degrees of cleaning represented are:
SSPCSP 7/NACE No. 4
SSPC-SP 14/NACE No. 8
SSPCSP 6/NACE No. 3
SSPC-SP 1O/NACE No. 2
SSPCSP 5/NACE No. 1
7. Notes
7.1 This edition of SSPCVIS 1 contains all of the photo
graphs contained in the 1989 edition. The written surface
preparation standards, such as SSPCSP S. are joint stan
dards of SSPC and NACE lnternational and are idenlified as
such in Section 3.3. This revised edilion also contains photo
graphs of previously painted sreel that has been abrasive blast
cleaned.
7 .2 The phorographs of nonmetallic abrasives in Appen
dix A illustrate the range of appearance produced by nonme
tallic abrasivas as a class. Among the abrasivas included in
lhis class are silica sand. olivine sand, garnet. flint shot. copper slag, coal slag, and nickel slag. The abrasive used lor each
photograph is not specifically identified because noticeable
variations in appearance were observed among the abrasivas
within a given generic class (e.g.. copper slag).
A similar set of photographs illustrates the range of ap
pearance produced by melallic abrasivas as a class. which
includes steel shol, steel grit. and combinatons and modifica
tions of these two abrasiva media.
7 .3 In addition to the photographs prepared from previ
ously painted sleel shown in the Condition G series. the pho
tographs in the Conditions A lhrough O series preparad from
unpainted steel are often found to be representative of the ap
pearance of blast cleaned steel lhal was previously panted.

1.Alcance
mximos posibles.

TIONAL:

SP 6/NACE No. 3
SP 7/NACE No. 4
SP 1O/NACE No. 2
SP 14/NACE No. 8
4.Condiciones Representadas
acero prevamente pintado. Las condiciones de oxidacin son:
Condicin A: Superficie de acero completamente
cubierta con escamas de laminado
adheridas: poca o no visible oxidacin
Soplado a Cepllo
Soplado Industrial
Soplado Comercial
Soplado Casi Blanco
Soplado a Metal Blanco
