Note : All questions are compulsory . Support your answers with neat sketches wherever required.
***It is compulsory to attempt all the questions of a section at one place.***

Section A
1 Draw a layout indicating the major assemblies of an automobile?

8
2 Differentiate between slip and drag in relation to a friction clutch. Explain the mechanism which is used to 12
prevent the selection of two gears at same time in a manual transmission gearbox.
3 Mr. John is very experienced racing driver. He drives two similar cars having same engine power and other 10
body parts but one or equipped with torque converter assisted automatic gearbox while other is fitted with a
constant variable transmission. Mr. John tested the two vehicles for acceleration to achi.ve 100 km/hr speed.
Which car wit. achieve this speed faster aml why? Also describe, which car will consume less firel?
Section
4 What is the 8unction of servo assistance and list different types of servo mechanisms in brat( Describe the 10
difference in system layout for different vacuum servo mechanisms?
5 If your vehicle has an open differential and you are moving in straight direction and certainly one of the wheel 8
is on slippery surface then what will happen? How you can ensure that your vehicle will perform
in efficient
manner under above condition?
6 Explain the working of three way catalytic converter with the help of suitable sketch. Describe main pollution 12
constituents rectified by it and how?
Section C
7 a. What is variable gear ratio steering system and explain how it is more advantageous upon
uniform ratio 5
steering gear?
b. If tyre wear is more at outer edge than which camber is employed to wheels? Further considering this 5
condition, explain the feel (harder or lighter) on steering wheel that will be experienced by driver and why?
8 List out the various configurations of leaf springs and their application. Also justify the reason that makes each 10
type suitable for corresponding application.
9 Different types of tread patterns are preferred for different road conditions. Describe in details the importance 10
of tread pattern for a vehicle to be driven in sand, snow, rain and normal dry surface using constructional
features of all the four cases.
