Chapter 2 Introduction To Taguchi Method 2.1 Background

This document provides an introduction to the Taguchi method for designing experiments. It discusses the background of design of experiments and how Taguchi constructed guidelines to reduce the number of experiments using orthogonal arrays. The key concepts explained are the definition of orthogonal arrays, properties of orthogonal arrays like balancing and how they minimize experiments. The assumptions of the Taguchi method and the steps to design an experiment using orthogonal arrays are also summarized.

2.2.4Minimumnumberofexperimentstobeconducted
Thedesignofexperimentsusingtheorthogonalarrayis,inmostcases,efficientwhencomparedtomany
otherstatisticaldesigns.TheminimumnumberofexperimentsthatarerequiredtoconducttheTaguchi

Forexample,incaseof8independentvariablesstudyhaving1independentvariablewith2levelsand

theabovecaseis18.

2.3AssumptionsoftheTaguchimethod
Theadditiveassumptionimpliesthattheindividualormaineffectsoftheindependentvariableson

Thedetailsoftheabovestepsaregivenbelow.
2.4.1Selectionoftheindependentvariables
Beforeconductingtheexperiment,theknowledgeoftheproduct/processunderinvestigationisofprime

2.4.2Decidingthenumberoflevels
Oncetheindependentvariablesaredecided,thenumberoflevelsforeachvariableisdecided.Theselection
ofnumberoflevelsdependsonhowtheperformanceparameterisaffectedduetodifferentlevelsettings.If
theperformanceparameterisalinearfunctionoftheindependentvariable,thenthenumberoflevelsetting

theassumptionoflevelsettingisrightornotbasedonthepercentcontributionandtheerrorcalculations.
2.4.3Selectionofanorthogonalarray
Beforeselectingtheorthogonalarray,theminimumnumberofexperimentstobeconductedshallbefixed
basedonthetotalnumberofdegreesoffreedom[5]presentinthestudy.Theminimumnumberof

Oncetheminimumnumberofexperimentsisdecided,thefurtherselectionoforthogonalarrayisbasedon

2.4.4Assigningtheindependentvariablestocolumns
Theorderinwhichtheindependentvariablesareassignedtotheverticalcolumnisveryessential.Incaseof

2.4.5Conductingtheexperiment
