to music while doing homework. Draw
pictures of your favorite or craziest "while"
activities and post them on the bulletin board.

Overview/General Instructions
Prior to handing out worksheets, review
concepts and talk about synonyms and
antonyms, if they exist.

Have fun with your students by giving them

fun directions like, "While you pat your head
with one hand, rub your tummy with your
other hand" or "Stamp your feet while you
clap your hands" or "Touch your nose while
your eyes are closed."

Have your students use the target words to

talk about the worksheet after it's completed.
For example, "I have soccer practice
tomorrow after school."

Today-Tomorrow-Yesterday
Read the riddle on page 126 to help your
students understand these concepts. Before
completing the tasks on this page, talk with
your students about the things they will be
doing today at school. Then encourage your
students to tell what they did yesterday and
what they plan to do tomorrow.

Worksheet Instructions
Before-After
Play a version of "Simon Says" using the
words before and after. Each time you say
Simon Says, add a before or after command.
For example, "Simon Says touch your elbow,
but before you touch your elbow, hop three
times" and "Simon Says turn around two
times, and after you're done, sit down."

After your students complete the worksheet

on page 127, use the weather pictures on the
calendar for extra practice with these
concepts. For example, ask If its going to be
cloudy tomorrow, what is the weather
like today?

Early-Late
Talk about what kinds of things you do early
in the day and contrast with the things you do
late in the day.

First-Next-Last
Use first, next, and last to talk about the
events of the day, such as First we have
reading, next we go to gym, and last we have
math. Have your students draw pictures to
represent these activities, cut them out, and
put them in order from first to last.

Talk about what might happen if you arrived

someplace (i.e. school) early. What might
happen if you arrived someplace late?
Review the idea of time lines and getting
work finished on time. Ask your students to
name some things they have time lines for
and to discuss what happens when they get
done early vs. when they get done late.

Bring the ingredients of a peanut butter and

jelly sandwich to school. Have some fun
with your students as they tell you how to
make the sandwich using the words first,
next, and last. Make sure you follow their
directions exactly.

While
Take turns sharing what you like to do while
you do other things for example, eating
popcorn while watching a movie or listening

The Day After-The Day Before

Play "Jeopardy" with your students. Write the
days of the week on index cards. Make
enough cards so that each student can have
one. Then give clues like, "This is the day
after ______" or "This is the day before
______." When a student hears a clue that
matches his day, he holds his card up and
says, "What day is ______?" For more of a
challenge, ask your students to make up
the clues.

caterpillar. Make a head and twelve sections

(one for each month). Students will then
"work the puzzle" by putting the caterpillar
together in order from January to December.
Calendar Words
Give each student a blank calendar of the
current month. Have students write in the
things they need to remember this month.
Add events as they come up during the
month. Take time to talk about the calendar
periodically. Review what happened before
today and what is going to happen after
today using target calendar words like the
day before/after, next/last ____, week,
and month.

Week
Before reading the poem on page 131,
assign a day of the week to each of seven
students. To help them learn the sequencing
of the days, have each child stand or "pop
up" from the group when her day is said.

Second-Minute-Hour
After you read the poem on page 141 to your
students, brainstorm other activities. Write
three header words on the chalkboard:
Second, Minute, and Hour. Then brainstorm
activities with your students that fit under
each time period. If they have trouble, name
an activity for them and have them decide
how long it would take.

Talk about the different things your students

do each day of the week. Which days do they
go to school? Which days do they stay
home? Which day is their favorite? Why?
Month-Year
Sing the song on page 135 to your students
to help them learn the months of the year.
Use the tune Calendar Girl by Neil Sedaka.
If you dont know this tune, say it as a rhyme
with your students, either with or without the
refrain.

Before they do an assignment, have your

students estimate how long they think it will
take them to finish it. Then have them time
themselves while doing the assignment and
report the results. Talk about how this may
help them do better in school.

Make a birthday bulletin board. Place

calendar pages for the months of the year on
the bulletin board. Ask each student when
his birthday is and mark it on the calendar. If
possible, let students mark their own
birthdays. (You could use pictures of the
students if you like.) Then talk about whose
birthday is first, whose is last, who has
birthdays in the same month, etc.

At ____ O'Clock-At Noon

Use poster board to make a clock, an hour
hand, and a minute hand. Write in the hours
on the clock. Then use a brad to fasten the
hour and minute hands to the clock. Use the
clock to play "What Time Is It?" with your
students. Position the hands on the clock to
an hour. Let's use 6 o'clock as an example.

Use cardboard or poster board to make a

calendar "puzzle" in the shape of a

Teacher to student: "What time is it?"

Student: "It's 6 o'clock."

Time Words
Make a bulletin board using time words you
want your students to practice. Write time
words, equal signs, and numbers on index
cards. To start with, post the words and
equal signs on the bulletin board.

Teacher: "What do you do at 6 o'clock?"

Student: "I hop six times."
Then the student hops six times. (You can
change hop to clap my hands, turn around,
take __ steps, etc.) Then change the hour on
the clock and call on another student.

For example:
"____ hours = ____ day" or
"____ week = ____ days."

During
Cut out pictures of different types of clothes,
coats, and shoes. Place them facedown on
a table. Have a student choose a picture.
Then ask the student to tell you if he would
wear that piece of clothing during the
summer, during the spring, during the fall, or
during the winter. Have your students cut out
or draw pictures of the things they see or do
during a season. Then let them glue their
pictures on paper to make a "season"
collage.

100% ConceptsPrimary
time

Then have your students put the numbers

where they belong.
Brainstorm activities that usually take a long
time to finish. Categorize these activities
under the headers Day, Week, Month, and
Year. You might want to divide your students
into small groups and give each group a list
of activities to assign to a time period. When
theyre finished, have the groups compare
their results.

Dear Family,
Weve been practicing special time words in class. Some of these words are
______________________________________________________________.
Here are some ways you can help me practice these words at home.
Make a calendar of important things to remember for the week or month.
Talk about whats happening or what happened using words like today,
tomorrow, the day after (name a day), the day before (name a day), and
yesterday.
Talk about the time of day for daily events, such as when we have
appointments, when we get up, and when we come home from school.
Each day in the morning, talk about what day it is and what you will do,
what day yesterday was and what you did, and what day tomorrow is and
what you want to do.
Im really proud of what Im learning! Thank you for helping me!
Love,
