Direct Variation Notes1

The document discusses direct variation and how to write an equation relating two variables x and y that vary directly. It provides that direct variation means y = kx, where k is the constant of variation. It also gives an example where x = -3 and y = -30, and asks to write the equation relating x and y.

Unit 2 - Functions

Direct Variation
End in Mind: The variables x & y vary directly. When x = -3, y = -30.
Write an equation that relates x and y.

Direct Variation - the relationship of two variables x and y if there is a nonzero number k
such that y = kx. The variables x and y vary directly. (Ex/ Hourly pay)

Model for Direct Variation -

y = kx
k = constant of variation
To find k:

Ex/ Find the following (if possible)

A. Does the data show direct variation? Show work.
B. If it does, find the constant of variation and write the equation. Be sure to define your
variables.
C. If it does not show direct variation, explain why not.
