3.3 The Concept of Density


-The density of a substance is defined as the quantity of mass contained in the substance for a
unit volume.

Different substances have different densities. Here are the densities for some common
substances.

- Buoyancy (or flotation) refers to the ability of a substance to float or sink in another substance.
- A lower density substance will float on a higher density liquid.
- On the other hand, a higher density substance will sink in a lower density liquid.

-A gas can be converted into liquid when it is compressed under high pressure and temperature is
lowered. Compressed gases occupy less space.
- Examples:
- Pipes are used to transport matter in gases or liquid state.
-Used of strong and hard steel, iron, wood and aluminium for building vehicle and furniture.
- Rubber and plastic used as insulator
- Man can also make use of concept of density in everyday life. Some example are :
a. Buoy -The buoy is filled with air and has a lower density than water.
b. Raft - The raft has a lower density than water.
c. Submarine - The submarine float and sink in the sea.
d. Hot air ballon/ meteorological ballons- float in the atmosphere because helium less dense than
air and hot air is less dense than cool air.
