The Mice That Set the Elephants Free

There was once a town which had been abandoned. The mice living in that area gradually
took over the whole town. They moved out of their holes in the fields and filled up the empty
buildings.
They built so many nests in the buildings that there were a lot of holes and tunnels running all
over the town. They celebrated all kinds of mouse festivals, had concerts and weddings. They
had story-telling sessions too, where the elderly mice told the younger ones about how the
town had been when people had lived there. All in all, they had a wonderful time, living in
their mouse town. They even elected their own ruler and ministers for their town.
However, their happiness did not last very long. Not far from this town, deep in the jungle,
lived an elephant king. He ruled over a herd of more than a thousand elephants. There came a
time when the lake in the jungle dried up.
One day the elephant king heard about the lake that was near the mouse town. He decided to
lead his herd to the lake. As the elephants marched through the mouse town, many of the mice
who were in their way were killed or badly injured.
After the huge animals had passed through, the remaining mice gathered for a meeting in the
town hall, all very upset and frightened.
There wont be any one of us left if they keep on going to and fro through our town, said
one mouse.
Yes, we must stop them, shouted another.
But what shall we do? asked a grandfather mouse.
We must come up with a plan to solve this problem, said one of the smart mice.
All the mice sat down to think of a clever plan. At last they came up with one that they were
sure would work. A few of the brave mice were chosen to be messengers. These messengers
went to the lake to meet with the elephant king.
They bowed respectfully to the elephant king. Then the leader of the messengers said, Oh,
Elephant King, not far from here is our little town. We have lived there for a very long time.
All this while we have led happy and peaceful live there. But now, you and your herd pass
through our town to drink water at the lake. And whenever you do, many of our mice get
killed because they are crushed under the feet of the elephants. Please have pity on us. Please
take another route to reach the lake.
The elephant king thought about what the mice had told him. He decided that what the mice
had asked for was not all wrong. He therefore agreed to their request. The elephants then took
another route to the lake and the mice once more lived peacefully in their town.
A few months passed by. One day the ruler of that country ordered his elephant trappers to
trap some elephants. The trappers at once set out to make some traps in the jungle. Three days

after the traps were set, the elephant king and most of his herd were caught in the traps. The
trappers took the elephants out of the traps and tied them to some stout trees in the jungle. The
men used such strong ropes that no matter how hard the elephants tugged and pulled, they
could not break free.
After the trappers had gone, the elephant king thought, How will I ever get free? Then he
remembered the mice. He asked one of the elephants that had not been caught to inform the
mice of what had happened and to ask for their help. The messenger rushed to the mouse
town. When the mice saw the elephant approaching they at first became very frightened,
thinking that the elephant king had broken his promise to them. But when they heard about
what had happened, they quickly gathered by the thousands at the town square. Then they
followed the elephant to where the other elephants were kept tied up. As soon as they reached
the spot, they quickly began to gnaw at the ropes that were tied around these huge creatures.
In short while, all the ropes were cut and all the elephants were free.
The moral of the story is even a small and weak person can help a strong one.
