B.Riddim aka Bellatur G-Ward ...
a Portuguese producer, songwriter, DJ, Live Musician and MC born in the city of Guarda in 1987, is an
artist who achieves, with his music, a seamless cross-over of old styles, with present-day sounds, with
an eye towards the future.
Having been exposed to analogue sounds since he
was a kid, this influence has always been strong in
his creations. Coming from an artistic family, and
with classical roots, B. studies Classical Piano and
Music Theory at the conservatory of his native town.
He soon widens his musical vision, to embrace
sampling and the creation of Hip Hop beats during
his teen years; this all converges in an extended
project called G-Ward - involving pure rap, of the
dirty variety, with industrial sounds which lasted
more than six years.
B. also develops, early in his life, a passion for music
coming from Jamaica or Jamaican-inspired,
especially old-school styles like Roots Reggae and
Rocksteady, but also more recent Dub and electronic
productions.

rather, he can combine them with the new beats that
make him tick, so that his own musical ideas finally
come to life and gain more and more strength, as
time goes by in this new town.
Currently based in Vancouver BC, Canada, B.Riddim
is working on a new type of sound. This young
musician is still producing heavy bass lines,
swooning hypnotic synths, and entrancing drum
patterns, but his music is now mature, after crossing
Hip Hop, Roots, Grime, Dub, and Dubstep. You can
maybe recognize elements from all these styles and
much more in B.Riddim, yet his music is none of
those.

After some turbulence, the B.Riddim aircraft lands


safely in Madrid, where he can give life and shape to
the riddims he has been nurturing for years, within
his creative mind, also because he attends a local
college, where he studies Audio Engineering.

B.Riddim is a complete artist,


both as a composer and as a
performer. The quality of his
productions has taken record
labels and promoters by storm;
who knows about music just a
little will recognize in B. all
the qualities for great trendsetting success.

At this stage, a more personal sound appears and


gains shape and consistency; Dub, Dubstep and IDM
start to become his favourite channels of
expression, giving him the chance to model his
music more on what he really feels. However, he
does not abandon Hip Hop, Reggae, or the sampling

BS STUDIO SETUP
LIVE PERFORMANCE
During his live performances or DJ sets,
B.Riddim normally plays and edits sounds and
tracks created by him. For the shows, B. uses a
Macbook Pro running Ableton Live!, an Audio
Interface, an Akai/Ableton APC40 controller and
an Akai MPK25 keyboard controller, with the
integration of live instruments from invited
guests.
The Mac obviously launches and streams the
information coming from the Ableton Live
system, through the Audio Interface. The main
sequencer is clearly the APC40; it is here that B.
conducts and launches all the tracks, using it as
an analogue mixer, while the machine is
definitely not analogue. This way, each channel
corresponds to an instrument or a track, and
they can be played or sequenced separately in
real-time. Normally B. works with 10 audio
channels and 2 Midi ones, which he needs to
control one instrument and one sampler.
Normally B. uses a Phaser to raise the drum
sounds, and a Delay to hypnotize the audience,
thanks to subtle lines of certain rhythmic
elements sequenced or played at the right time.

B.RIDDIM

Melodically complex, B.Riddims basics are


well-cut progressive basslines, with a tight
rhythmic backbone. The drum patterns begin
from classical Dub associated with electronic
trends, with subtle elements or effects, which
create a tri- dimensionality typical of BRiddim's style. B.'s drum sounds are a fusion
of kits based on the Roots of the 60s with
more modern sounds, like late 80s/early 90s
House and Techno, with their heavy
bassdrums, and 2000s minimalistic patterns.
His snares are normally kept sharp and
short, but they become fat for certain tunes
involving less electronics.
B.Riddim's music reflects his character and
it's absolutely an expression of his soul. The
creative process varies a little, depending on
how it starts. However, the brain of B.'s
operations is Propellerhead Reason, where
he outlines his projects, sometimes using
Ableton Live at this stage to create rhythmic
components to complete the bassline.
The bass is very wobbly in certain tunes, and
very Roots in others, but almost always
passing through the typical Dubstep-style
filters: LFO with rates normally at 1/4, a long
release and a moderate sustain, but with
long attacks when the basslines are very
fractioned. This is all a result of Reason's
NN19. This stage of the process is normally
worked simply with WAV or AIFF files, apart
from when Ableton is used; then there will
also be some MIDI.
The last part is normally routed through Live,
where B. can express his creativity editing,
mixing, recording, cutting, etc. This young
artist records live instruments, whenever
necessary and possible, and adds a whole
series of effects that characterize his sound:
a lot of Delay, Phaser, heavy Modulation for
the organ, Distortion and subtle Reverb.
Logic is perfect to achieve exactly what B.
wants from his music; it lets him work
manually and in detail, because it allows total
control. So the brain of the whole operation,
Reason, is exalted by Logic, the heart, which
is able to elevate the spirit of each finished
track.

YOU WANT BASS?


The Fourth Tape is
B.Riddim's latest
unreleased album,
showcasing what this
young musician is
currently up to. The
quality of his previous
productions has taken
record labels and
promoters by storm. So
do you want Bass, then?

1- The Reason - Rumble Dub - Tune in properly, like the radio at the start of the track, to be served art that is
real Art. "The Reason - Rumble Dub" is a purifying track, with haunting B.Riddim-style synth sounds, an angel-faced piano and a
bassline smiling at each other while you nod your head to the groove. The piano melody and the syncopated bass groove give a
narrative feel to this track, ready for some meaningful lyrics.

2- Dub Is My Land - This tune boasts a killer arrangement, a trip through the fantastic dimension of the sampling
universe. Lots of sweet cuts in this track; groovy party drums matched by a big spine-tingling wobble bass offer unexpected
results. The whole condenses in a story told in a few minutes, full of powerful breaks that awaken appetite for lyrics.

3- Idea - Proud Dub - Music is absolute pride! Love, passion, suffering and determination, but most of all loyalty;
loyalty to pure "riddim", with a lingering taste of Augustus Pablo, according to some. Maybe his spirit has inspired B. with a track
that impresses especially for its simplicity. Once again the melodica and the swooshing filters and LFOs give this riddim a sweet
depth and enchanting atmosphere.

4- (In)TenZion - Born in Madrid as "Dub...Idoso", this track has been reworked to sound like the ultimate ganja dub.
The (In)Ten'Zion is just to have some fun. The new cut ends up being a fantastic blend of sounds and movements with a fresher,
more tropical feel to it.

5- B.Live - This project stands out because of its quality. The megaphones evoke screams, because everything is in
movement, everything vibrates. The sweet voice at the start feeds power and strength to the revolt. The pad's enveloping width
creates the right atmosphere for belief. The melodica tells the events in a very particular and descriptive way...B.Live.

6- Peaception Dub - Selassie, Peter Tosh, Goenka. This is the recipe for a funny dub with techy leads, where a
traditional 'pipe' sound and an exhilarating synth tell you what needs to be done: move yourself! Very groovy and head-nodding, it
is sure to work properly on the floor. The intention is to open your mind, but first enter your heart.

7- 3 Dub - El Otro - Character is the keyword. This is a track with a strong character and a more Dubstep
soundscape, a world B. explores, as in previous releases, with a subtle touch of 'sampling' definitely Portuguese, from the 60's. In
fact, Adriano Correia de Oliveira is once again the leading voice, as in the powerful, previously-released "Wake Up Dude. The
electronic component is the perfect link to the magical sound of the melodica; the 'bells' are the purifying voice that cleanses you.
One must have character.
