FOR TRAINING OF
CONCRETE FIELD TESTING TECHNICIANS
FOREWORD
The ACI Certification Program for Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade 1 has been developed for the
Purpose of certifying concrete technicians who have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to perform
properly the basic field tests on plastic concrete.
Certification of field test personnel by CSA Intemational or the American Concrete Institute (ACI) is a
requirement of the CSA standard for concrete, A23.1-09 Concrete materials and methods of concrete
construction published by Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The previous edition of this standard is
referenced in the current National Building Code of Canada and is commonly referenced in specifications
Issued on most public and private projects in Canada, The new edition of this standard is expected to be
referenced in the 2010 National Building Code.
‘The ACI has created and maintained in Canada a Certification program modelled on its American counterpart
‘The program is aimed at improving the accuracy and reliability of the field testing of plastic concrete. In
addition to upgrading the quality of concrete construction, this program is intended to provide personnel to
satisfy the mandatory certification requirements of the CSA A23.1-09 Standard and to form the basis for
higher level certification programs. Technicians who upgrade their skills and credentials through ACI
certification will increase their own employment opportunities as well as contribute to the advancement of the
industry.
The Technician Workbook 2009, Canadian Edition describes the operation of the ACI Certification Program
and provides technical materials and directions necessary to prepare for the examinations.
This Canadian version of the ACI Technician Workbook was prepared by the ACI Manitoba Chapter based,
with permission, on the ACI Publication CP-1 which incudes ASTM methods and tests only. This version
reflects Canadian requirements for the test methods and related field practises.
