Minihydro GANZ en

The document describes Ganz Engineering and Energy Production Machinery LLC's container-installed mini hydropower plant. The system fits a standard hydroelectric power plant into two shipping containers for easy transportation and installation. It can generate up to 2 MW of power from water sources with a flow rate of 1 m3/s and a head of 120 m. The containerized design allows remote areas without electricity access to utilize local hydropower resources for affordable power generation.

GANZ TURBINES IN ALL OUTPUT RANGES

Ganz EEM is the only manufacturer of
water turbines in Hungary. The history
of turbine manufacturing in the company stretches back to the 1890s.
The output of Ganz turbines ranges
from the smallest, 50-kW units up to
medium sized machines with an output of 50 MW or even higher.
Manufactured types: Pelton, Francis, Kaplan, pipe turbines and Stype turbines. We also supply single-shaft, coolant water circulation

FAST AND COST-EFFICIENT SOLUTION FOR CONNECTING REMOTE AREAS RICH IN

machine groups, which enable energy savings in thermal power plants.

Our engineers design the water turbines using theoretical calculations,
computer simulations and on the
basis of small-scale model experiments performed in the laboratory.
We determine the type of water turbine necessary in the knowledge of
the available head and water flow
rate.
Our turbines may have a horizontal,
vertical or inclined shaft.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

The unit developed by Hungarian engineers is a compact, mini hydro power

plant fitted into a standard container,
which, after transportation to the location, can be put into operation in a short
space of time and can even be remotely
operated and monitored via a satellite
system.

The container-installed mini hydro power

plant is suitable for industrial or residential
electricity supplies in areas where there is
no electricity network constructed, or the objective may be to replace an existing expensive diesel-generated supply with a cheaper
system based on an available water energy
source. The condition for the installation and
operation of the mini hydro power plant is a
potentially continuously available supply of
hydro energy with which electricity can be
generated.
The great advantage of the container mini hydro power plant is that, after transportation to
the site, it can be installed easily, and the time
required before energy production is started
can be shortened as after providing the conditions required for operation and connecting
the turbine to the water supply, it can be put

into operation in just a short amount of time.
The installed system includes all units needed to operate, control and monitor the power
plant. The battery unit provides the power for
the control system when the turbines are stationary and, if required, it sends information
to the remote monitoring system via satellite.
Without a local electric network connection,
a remote controlled diesel generator provides
the electricity needed to start up the power
plant (black start).

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

The system consisting of a generator connected to the horizontal-shaft, medium output Francis turbine installed in the container
and the regulation units supplies 400-volt,
3-phase, 50 Hz electric energy. Its operation requires a head of 60-65 m and a water
flow rate of approximately 1 m3 per second.
With these basic conditions it is possible
to construct a system with a nominal output of 500 kW. With a maximum head of
120 m and a water flow rate of 1 m3/s, the
system is able to produce a nominal output
of 1 MW.
The volume of water supply is limited by the
dimensions of the standard container. Larger
volume of water can be utilised economically
by installing several independent containerturbine of the required power. Depending on
flow rate (Q) and head (H) of water, the turbine
output varies from 0.4 to 2.0 MW. Depending on other Q-H conditions that may occur,
other turbine solutions can be implemented
for the better utilization of the bigger energy
potential. The container-installed hydro power plant may be operated in an isolated way,
in so-called island operation mode. The system elements are installed in two containers.

The first container houses the water connection and the turbine generator. The other,
which is also a standard container, contains
the electricity switching and regulation system. In order to install the mini hydro power
plant it is necessary to prepare the foundations for the containers, the headwork, the
head gate, the power conduit as well as the
local network in advance.
