eight years each.

Genetics Salaries
While genetic engineers can earn
anywhere from $44,320 to $139,440 a
year, the median wage was closer to
$82,840, reports the National Human
Genome Research Institute. Though

Kind of Work
Necessary Knowledge

Genetic engineers use molecular tools

to rearrange fragments of DNA. By

doing so they can remove or add

elements of an organism's genetic
makeup, or even transfer DNA from one
species to another. While technically not
engineers, the term still applies in the
sense that they are reworking the
structure of DNA.
By altering the genetic makeup of
species, genetic engineers can develop
organisms that are better suited to meet
environmental challenges. For example,
plants can be made more resistant to
diseases and pests. Viruses and bacteria
can be adapted to carry drugs to
targeted tissues. Engineers rework
genetic material to make organisms
healthier and more efficient.

Working Conditions
Most genetic engineering research
scientists spend a large proportion of
their time in clean, well-equipped
laboratories. They generally work thirtyfive to forty hours a week. In some
cases, they may work extra hours to
complete special projects.
Genetic engineering research
scientists usually work as part of a
team. They must be able to cooperate
and communicate with other scientists
in their field. They should enjoy working

and be willing to comply with stringent
