ABSTRACT
Page | 4
This survey was to investigate the sources of stress among college students in Kolej Yayasan
Pelajaran Johor. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect research data. A total of 50
questionnaires were distributed, and all the 50 valid responses were obtained. This survey
examined various academic, interpersonal, and environmental stressors. This survey determined
the major sources of stress for students. Some of the areas that were investigated were the
stressors that students are encountering; how they handle various stressors, and ways students
manage stressors. This area of study is important because students are undergoing multiple life
changes. This life change can add a strenuous amount of stress on a student. Investigating the
different areas where stress occurs can help students learn ways to cope with their stress.
INTRODUCTION
Page | 5
There have been many studies which have reported strong relationship between stress and
college students. Some individuals are more sensitive to some stressors than others; so, the
persons characteristics and behavior patterns must be looked at to determine their importance
and their vulnerability to stress. The experience of stress in humans is universal, but there are
also marked individual differences in how stress is experienced. Stress has been known to be
the fuel the body uses to meet the challenges of our fast-paced modern life; for others, it is the
aversive by-product of such a life. Stress has been associated with major life events, daily life
hassles, and changes in life. Stress is created by excessive environmental and internal demands
that need constant effort and adjustment.
Many college students undergo considerable stress due to the demands associated with
change: leaving home, becoming independent decision makers, and competing against new
standards. Some students can see these transitions as a positive experience that can be exciting,
but some students seem to be threatened by this change. Graduate school is where many graduate
students experience a time of increased demands, expectations, and stress. Stress can affect a
students grades, health, and personal adjustment. How students perceive the immediate
environment, their personal lives, and tasks confronting them serves to define, in a unique
manner, people and events as potentially dangerous or relatively innocuous.
A questionnaire survey was created to determine the stress among college students. A
questionnaire consisting of two sections, including basic data and stress among students was
developed. A 10-item, questionnaire was administered to students of Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran
Johor using convenience sampling method. The questionnaires were classified as either daily
hassles or major life events. The questionnaires were randomly distributed to the students around
the college. Participants were 50 students at a mid sized, Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran Johor and
varied in year in school, gender, age, race, religion and major. Due to time constraints a study
was not conducted to compare the stress levels of graduate and undergraduate student stress.
Being there has not been much research done on comparing these two populations, this would be
a study that could be pursued in the future when there are not any time constraints.

students often suffer from stress. The students agreed that too many assignments cause stress
among them. In addition, students also agreed that family problems and friends cause students to
suffer stress. Futhermore, the students agreed that stress will interupt students study and most of
the students get depressed when suffering stress. Moreover, the students agreed that students
shared their problems with their friends, family or counselor when suffer from stress. However ,
most of the students dont know that boyfriend/girlfriend can add up to their stress. On the other
hand, majority of the students disagreed that students smoke to overcome stress. Stress cannot be
prevented, but there seem to be some interventions available that students can acquire to help
them relieve some of the stress the may be experiencing. This research was help to show the
interventions that can be used to elp reduce the stress level in students life.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The researches recommend that university decision makers have to provide students with
a psychological, social and academic counselling in order to decrease the students stress. So they
can achieve better and have a good mental health. They have to involve students with different
activities to reduce the gaps between them; also they have to provide students with a suitable
teaching and learning methods in order to decrease their academic stress.
College students should pay attention to their physical and mental health and examine
their emotions at all times to avoid onset of stress-induced depression or physical disorders.
Besides, they should learn to understand, accept, and recognize themselves, take a positive
attitude toward getting along with their friends, learn to express and manage their emotions, and
effectively manage their emotions so as to develop positive relations and an optimistic view of
life. In their learning process, they should cultivate an undaunted spirit. Once any stress-induced
emotion arises, they should relax the emotion through an appropriate channel, examine their own
problems, and seek solutions.
Moreover , college students should play an active role in stress management. On one
hand, they can learn various stress coping measures from various channels and transform anxiety
or frustration caused by inadequate adaptation to stress. On the other, they should also enhance
their emotions management abilities, monitor their emotions, and build their own emotions
management models. If any stress arises, they should analyze the causes of the stress from a
positive perspective and seek solutions or support from professional institutions.
Family support is helpful for students faced with stress, no matter how they are adaptable
to the stress. While college students should take advantage of family support, their family
members should try to understand their interests, specialties, and abilities so as to avoid having
too high expectations of them and causing them additional stress.
