In January, grade 6 students will focus on several subjects: In reading, students will continue analyzing paired texts and comparing themes. In math, they will learn to write and solve equations involving different operations and graph inequalities. In science, students will study light and mechanical waves and begin thinking about their science fair projects. In writing, students will work on informative essays and citing sources. Whats Going on in the Classroom?

Reading
In reading/language arts we will continue
to work on analyzing paired texts in our guided reading groups by using appropriate leveled
passages. We will continue to focus strongly
on comparing and contrasting themes within
these texts in addition to other skills. These
skills include supporting answers to questions
with appropriate evidence from the text and
analyzing how certain scenes fit into the overall structure of a story. Literature discussions
will continue to take place almost weekly.

Math
In Math, students will be learning to write
and solve equations that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students
will also be learning to problem solve using
equations. Finally, we will focus on writing
inequalities and writing a solution set as a way
to solve them. Once students are comfortable
with writing a solution set, they will learn to
graph inequalities.
Science
Students will continue to learn about light
waves and mechanical waves while using their
science interactive notebooks during investigations. We will also continue to discuss in depth
the guidelines that pertain to the 2017 science projects fair. All students should be thinking of a
question that interests them. Projects must start
with a question! Guidelines will go home in January...

Writing
Currently, all students are working on
learning to write informative short essays that
require a lot of paraphrasing. We will be reviewing how to cite appropriately in order for
students to complete their larger science project report that will be completed at home.
