Use Moment-Area Method in Problems (1) To (4) .: M A C B M L/4 D

This document provides instructions and examples for using the moment-area method to solve for beam deflections and slopes at specific points given beam configurations and loadings. It includes 5 practice problems: 1) calculating slope and deflection at points on a cantilever beam, 2) determining slope and deflection at points on a simply supported beam, 3) finding deflection and slope at points on a loaded cantilever beam, 4) solving for support reactions on a loaded simply supported beam, and 5) calculating strain energy in a cantilever beam considering bending and shear stresses.

1. Calculate the slope and deflection at points B and C of the uniform cantilever beam (EI) as shown in
Figure 1.
2. For the beam shown in Figure 2, determine (a) the slope at end A , (b) the deflection at the centre C of
the beam
3. For the beam shown in Figure 3, determine (a) the deflection at point D, (b) the slope at end A.
4. For the beam and loading shown in Figure 4, determine the reaction at each support.
5. Determine the strain energy of rectangular cantilever beam shown in Figure 5, considering the effect of
both normal and shearing stresses. For h/L = 0.1 and 0.5, calculate the percentage error if the total strain
energy is approximated by bending energy only. Assume shear modulus G = E/3, where E is the Youngs
modulus.
