Factoring Contextualization by Hermando D. Lozano (Sinhs)

1. The document summarizes a 5 station math trail competition focusing on factoring polynomials. 2. The stations include rearranging tiles to form rectangles, completing factoring problems, decoding relationships between factors and products, identifying common elements in pictures, and factoring the greatest common monomial factor. 3. The goal is for students to demonstrate their understanding of key factoring concepts through interactive activities at each station.

TOPIC Factoring
CONTENT STANDARDS Demonstrates Understanding Of Key Concepts Of Factors Of
Polynomials.

What To Know?

Hello dear Grade 8 students! I am Mathew (an MMC lover). I badly need your help at
this time. I am joining a math trail competition and I need you Grade 8 learners to
make a team. Our goal in this section is to see and understand the association of
products to factors by doing the different stations (activities) given by Teacher
Hermando D. Lozano. If we can surpass the challenge triumphantly we will receive
the golden treasure (prize awaits us).

But we cant triumph these activities without our unity, hence,

cooperation is a
must. We have to face his challenges strong and bold. Lets volt in! Lets go!

MATH TRAIL
Station #1:
FACE THE CHALLENGE!
Welcome to this phase!
LETTER 1: Hello Grade 8 Studes and Mathew! I am glad to know that you Grade 8 accept the challenge.
I welcome you all to this MATH TRAIL. Welcome to Station 1! Heres the situation below. You are
challenged to answers all the given questions below in order to proceed to station 2.

SITUATION 1: Sta. Irene National High School has its principal office manned by Mr. Rodrigo C.
Limas, the school principal. He decided that the floor of the receiving room (at the left picture) will be
tiled so that it will look more appealing. The figure below at the right is the proposed design given by the
laborer; it needs a square made up of 36 tiles.
Now here are the questions you
have to overcome.

QUESTION
S

1. You are challenge to rearrange the tiles to create a rectangle which has the same
area as the original square. How many such rectangles can you construct/create?
2. What do you consider in looking for the other dimensions?
3. What mathematical concepts would you consider in forming different dimensions?
Why?
4. What if the length of one side is increased by unknown quantities (e.g. x), how could
you possibly represent the dimensions?

Congratulations Mathew and Grade 8 Studes! You have accomplished

the station 1 fantastically!

To proceed to station 2, you have to perform the activity below.

Activity 1: Check Your Status!

Like or Dislike

Description: Through this activity, it will find out how ready you are for this lesson
through your honest responses.

Answers: Answer all the questions below honestly by pasting the like or dislike that Im
going to provide you. Like shows that you are the one being referred to and
dislike means that you have no or little idea about what is being asked.

SKILLS ACQUIRED RESPONSES

1. Can factor numerical expressions easily

2. Can divide polynomials

3. Can apply the quotient rule of exponents

4. Can add and subtract polynomials

5. Can work with special products

6. Can multiply polynomials

Station #2:

FILL ME (IRF WORKSHEETS) !

LETTER 2: Welcome to Station 2, at this time, you have to complete the table by
filling up first the initial column of the chart with your answer to each item. This
activity will determine how much you know about this topic and your progress.

Express the following as Initial Revise Final

2. 9m2 16n2 =_________

3. 4a2 + 12a + 9 =_______
4. 2x2 + 9x 5 =________
5. 27x3 8y3 =_________
6. a3 + 125b3 =_________
7. xm + hm xn hn =_______

Congratulations everyone! You made it again! Proceed to Station 3.

Station #3:
DECODE THE MESSAGE (ProductFactor Association)!

LETTER 3: Hello everyone! Welcome to Station 3! Sir Hermando wants you to know how factors are
associated with products. In this connection, you are going to decode the message given below. You
are going to match the factors in Column A with the products in Column B to decode the secret
message to know the answer.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. 4x (3x 5) A. 6x2y2 + 3xy3 3xy2
2. 3xy2 (2x + y 1) F. x3 27
3. (x + y)(x y) G. 4x2 9
4. (2x + 3)(2x 3) R. 4x2 + 12x + 9
5. (x 5y)(x + 5y) U. 12x2 20x
6. (x + y)2 E. 6x2 + x 2
7. (2x + 3)2 T. ac ad + bc bd
8. (x 5y)2 S. mr nr + ms ns

Questions
1. What are your observations on the expressions in column A?
Compare them with those in column B.
2. Do you see any pattern?
3. Are the two expressions related?
4. Why is it important to know the reverse process of multiplication?

THE SECRET MESSAGE:

FACTORING IS THE REVERSE OF

MULTIPLICATION

What did you discover between the relationship

of products and its factors? You have just tried
finding out the relationship between factors and their
product. You can use this idea to do the next station,
station 4.

What you will learn in the next session will also enable you to do
the final

Station # 4:

SPOT THE COMMON!

LETTER 4: Welcome to Station 4! December 7-9, 2016, Division of Agusan del Sur conducted 3-day
Seminar Workshops about Contextualization and Localization of Mathematics. I (Teacher
Hermando) was one of the participants for Grade 08 level. Now, your task in this station is to
identify or spot common things that are present in the three pictures.

1. Based on the 3 pictures above, what are the things that are common?
Name them.
2. Are there things that make them different? Yes or No.
3. Can you spot things that are found on one picture but not on the other
two? Name it.
4. What are the things common to two pictures but are not found on the
other?

Mathalino! You are all keen observers! Proceed to Station 5 and

God bless you all for the final wave!

Station # 5:

COMPLETE MY EMPTINESS!

LETTER 5: Welcome to the last station, Station 5! The previous station gave you
the idea about the Greatest Common Monomial Factor that appears in
every term of the polynomial. I will give you an illustrative example on how
factoring the Greatest Common Monomial Factor is being done, study it very
well. Then answer the given table below so that it will be completed.

Study this! GIVEN

Factor 12x3y5 20x5y2z

A. Based on the given, find the greatest common factor of the numerical
coefficients.
ANSWER The GCF of 12 and 20 is 4.

B. Find the variable with the least exponent that appears in each term of the
polynomial.
x and y are common to all terms and 3 is the smallest
ANSWER
exponent for x and 2 is the smallest exponent of y, thus, x 3y2 is the GCF of the
variables.

C. The product of the greatest common factor in (a) and (b) is the GCF of the
polynomial.
ANSWER Hence, 4x3y2 is the GCF of 12x3y5 20x5y2z.

D. To completely factor the given polynomial, divide the polynomial by its GCF, the
resulting quotient is the other factor.

ANSWER Thus, the factored form of 12x3y5 20x5y2z is
4x3y2(3y3 5x2z) .

Complete the table.
