NS Toolbox Sdftalk 006 Welding Consumable Control and Tracebility

This document discusses the importance of welding consumable control and traceability for nuclear safety. It notes that using the wrong consumable could result in welds becoming weak points and failures. Proper traceability is needed to remove defective consumables and assure the correct ones were used. The consequences of improper control include not being able to verify welds or plants, adverse chemical reactions, and potential nuclear safety or conventional safety events. Good practices include segregated, color-coded storage; establishing controlled issue and return processes; and being able to trace all materials and products to certifications.

Sellafield Ltd Projects Supplier Nuclear Safety Working Group-

006 - Welding Consumable Control and Traceability

1. Why is it important?
The weld consumable is an essential variable within the weld procedure process.
Nuclear Safety Tool Box

We have to ensure that welds are made using the right consumable because the weld has to be at least
as strong as the parent material.
By using a traceability process we can, if necessary, remove and replace any defective consumables
before we install any fabrications.
Most of all it gives Sellafield Ltd the assurance that we have used the right consumables in the right
places.
Imagine finding a defective welding consumable batch on a process plant and not knowing where the
consumable had been used elsewhere.
Therefore to protect us all, Sellafield Ltd has to operate a full traceability process in accordance with our
specifications.

2. What are the consequences of getting it wrong?

If we use the wrong consumable the weld will become the weak point, which could result in a failure.
If we cannot demonstrate that we have used the correct weld consumables, we cannot verify the welds
or plant.
If we use the wrong weld consumable we can experience an adverse chemical reaction, which could
result in a failure.
A service failure could lead to a nuclear safety or conventional safety event, in some cases both.

3. Examples

What does good look like?

Segregated storage with colour coded and clear identified consumable types.
Ends of consumables are colour coded.
Colour coded quivers with consumable type labels.
We are able to identify each consumable batch to individual pieces of material or individual products.
We establish controlled issue and return processes.
We are able to trace all material and products back to the relevant certification.
We establish and maintain a questioning culture.
Regular briefings, toolbox talks, education and testing of understanding.
Regular surveillance of our working activities.
