Dear Parents of Fifth Grade, 02/07/17 Important Dates and

Assalamu Alaikum! Inshallah, you are all doing well


Reminders:
and getting as excited as the students for the break 02/10 Early Dismissal (2: 30)
that is approaching! 02/20-02/24 School Closed
(Mid-Winter Recess)
Alhumdulillah, everything in our classroom has 02/27 School Resumes
been going well and on schedule. We also had a great school spirit week, filled with lots of
activities and memory-making fun, during School Choice Week. We also enjoyed our field
trip to the Ecotarium, where students got to expand on their knowledge of conservation.
Currently we are busy working on our annual story book collection, which all of us in Fifth
Grade are excited to publish and share with friends and family.

Reading:
This month, we are reading stories from Unit 4, Adapting. We are also practicing for a play
from a previous unit, which we hope to perform in front of an audience, sometime this year.

Writing:
Students are currently working on their pieces and illustrations for our classrooms Storybook
Publications. Students have not been given a formal prompt or rubric for this piece because we
would like to encourage students to focus more on the creative aspects of this specific writing
piece. We will also be starting Writing Piece 4 shortly, likely before the break begins.

Math:
We will be wrapping up Chapter 8, Decimals (an introduction), later this week. We will then
be continuing on to Chapter 9, Multiplying and Dividing Decimals, which we hope to have
completed by the end of this month.

Social Studies:
We have just started Chapter 10, Planning a New Government. We will then continue on with
Chapter 11, The Young United States for the remainder of the month.
Science:
We are in the process of completing Chapter 5, The Water Cycle and Weather. We will then
follow this chapter up with Chapter 1, Properties of Matter. Preparations for the Science Fair
projects will also begin shortly.
