I. Course Description
In this class, we will explore variations of abnormal thoughts and behavior patterns in humans.
We will cover the clinical methods of conceptualizing and categorizing mental disorders, as well
as the history of, treatments for, and the socio-cultural influences on mental dysfunction. This
course hopes to answer these questions: What is abnormal? What kinds of abnormality are there?
How does this happen to people? And how can these people be helped?

II. Textbook and Student Resources

b. Blackboard
o Aside from lectures and discussions, this course will utilize electronic
resources. This course requires constant use of Baruch Colleges Online Blackboard
system. I will post material that will be required for the course.
o I will also use blackboard to post important course announcements and
updates. You are responsible for all announcements and course adjustments made
through Blackboard.

IV. Course Grades & Requirements

Quizzes: (25% each)


There will be 4 noncumulative quizzes throughout the semester that will cover basic concepts and
terms from class readings, Power Point slides and lecture. There will also be an optional
cumulative final exam at the end of the semester. Your cumulative quiz score will consist of the
highest four quizzes. Quizzes will be multiple choice.

****Make up exams will NOT be administered under any circumstances without proper
documentation explaining the emergency that prevented you from taking the exam during
the scheduled class time. These documents will be inspected upon submission. ****

Final Grade Breakdown:


Final Grades will be assigned as a percentage of total points as denoted by the Hunter
College grading policy (No rounding will be applied during final grading process).

A+ 97.5 - 100%
A 92.5 - 97.4%
A- 90.0 - 92.4%
B+ 87.5 - 89.9%
B 82.5 - 87.4%
B- 80.0 - 82.4%
C+ 77.5 - 79.9%
C 70.0 - 77.4%
D 60.0 - 69.9%
F 0.0 - 59.9%

V. Academic Integrity
The Department of Psychology fully supports Hunter College's policy on Academic Honesty,

" Academic dishonesty is prohibited in The City University of New York.
Penalties for academic dishonesty include academic sanctions, such as failing or
otherwise reduced grades, and/or disciplinary sanctions, including suspension or
expulsion.

Academic sanctions in this class will range from an F on an assignment/exam to an F in this


course. A report of suspected academic dishonesty will be sent to the Office of the Dean of
Students.
