I) Critical Fibre Length: - Mean Value A Indicates Where 4

The document contains an exam paper marking scheme for an MSc Mech Eng module on structures. Question 5 asks students to calculate the critical fibre length and composite strength and modulus for a carbon fiber reinforced polymer. It is determined that the critical fibre length is 1.12mm, the composite strength is 509MPa, and the tensile modulus range is 120-141GN/m^2 to meet requirements of a modulus over 120GPa and density below 1600kg/m^3.

i) Critical Fibre Length
The length of the fibre for full stress transfer from shear to tensile, reaching the
fracture strength of the fibre.

Considering stresses in a half embedded fibre in matrix

What is the minimum value of embedded length xmin of the fibre that the fibre stress
can attain its maximum value smax through shear transfer?
For this model, force on fibre must balance force on matrix, so
tensile stress X cross sectional area of fibre = average shear stress x surface area of
fibre

ii) From the information given we have values for
Overall fibre length = 3mm.
Diameter =8m
Tensile strength of the fibres = 2.8 GPa
Shear strength of the fibre-matrix interface = 10 Gpa

Critical fibre length;

l crit *f

d 2 i
2.8 10 9
l crit 8 10 6 1.12mm 2
2 10 10 6

Since the length of the fibres 3 mm exceeds the critical fibre length,
Longitudinal tensile strength of the composite can be found from:

2.8 10 9
1.12
c 0.4 1 90 10 6 0.6 509 10 6 4
2 2 3

Strength of the composite is therefore 509 MPa

What is the density for this volume fraction:
c F VF M V M
1850 0.45 1320 0.55 1558.5 kg/m 3
For maximum density of 1600 kg/m 3 what is the volume fraction:
c FVF MV M
1600 1850 V F 1320 (1 V F )
1600 1320
VF 0.53

For this volume fraction what is the modulus:
E c O L E F V F E M V M
E c 265 0.53 1.1 0.47 140.9 GN/m 2 [7]
Hence the range of volume fraction of carbon fibres : 45% - 53% giving a tensile
modulus of 120 141 GN/m2 and the density kept below 1600 kg/m 3 .
