Influence Line Diagram: Deformation

The document discusses influence line diagrams, which graphically show how internal forces at specific locations of a structure vary as a moving unit load traverses the structure. Influence line diagrams are useful for determining the positions of loads that cause maximum internal forces, such as the bending moments and shear forces in simply supported bridges as vehicle loads move across them, since some loads in structures do not remain static.

INFLUENCE LINE DIAGRAM

We have seen that all the loads which we dealt so far does not change
its position. It remains static.

For e.g. dead load of beam, slab etc. does not change its position

But there are situation were we may require to consider movement of

loads.

In the case of bridges, were the girders are simply supported over
supports, when the vehicle (with number of wheel loads) move from
one support to the other, there is a variation of INTERNAL
FORCES and DEFORMATION in the girder.

INFLUENCE LINE DIAGRAM
To identify the positions of loads for maximum internal forces at
specified sections, influence line diagram can be used.

Hence influence line diagram is a graph showing variation of

particular load effects at specified location when a unit load
traverses the structure
Load effects includes
Bending Moment
Shear Forces
Reaction
Stresses
Deformation etc.
