Assignment 2

This document contains 4 problems related to jet propulsion: 1) It asks to calculate various parameters like temperature, heat added, velocity, thrust, and efficiency for a jet aircraft engine given inlet/exit areas and temperatures. 2) It asks to estimate temperature, pressure, and thrust parameters for a Viper engine given stagnation ratios, flow rates, and efficiencies. 3) It asks to estimate additional parameters if the turbine inlet temperature is changed to 900K for the engine in problem 2. 4) It asks to calculate the ratio of thrusts between two turbofan engine concepts with different exhaust mixing approaches.

AE 341 (PROPULSION I)

Assignment No. 2
Due: 6/3/2017

Assume the value of any parameter needed for calculations and mention it clearly.

[1] A jet aircraft flies with a velocity of 200 m/s at an altitude where the air temperature is 330
C. The inlet and exit areas of the turbojet engine are 0.6 m2 and 0.4 m2 respectively. The
pressure of the air at the inlet and exit areas of the engine is 50 KPa. The compressor has a
pressure ratio of 9.0, and the inlet temperature of the turbine is 8470 C. Assuming that the
engine operates on an ideal cycle, calculate the following information:
(a) The temperature of air leaving the compressor
(b) The rate of heat added in the combustion process
(c) The exit flow velocity
(d) The exit flow Mach number
(e) The thrust produced by the engine
(f) The propulsive efficiency of the engine.

[2] A Viper engine is to be tested on a sea-level test bed. The engine has following parameters:
Stagnation pressure ratio P03/P02 = 5.5
Air flow rate = 23.81 Kg/s
Fuel flow rate = 0.4267 Kg/s
Compressor efficiency = 0.9
Turbine efficiency = 0.85
QR = 43 MJ/ Kg
Assume combustion process to be ideal.
Estimate the following parameters:
(a) Stagnation temperature at compressor discharge
(b) Temperature drop across the turbine
(c) Turbine inlet temperature
(d) Treating the nozzle as isentropic, find the jet velocity and the thrust produced.

[3] If the turbine inlet temperature for the engine mentioned in Q. [2] is 900 K, estimate the
required air flow rate, fuel mass flow rate, gross thrust and specific fuel consumption.

[4] Preliminary design calculations are being made for a turbofan engine with a bypass ratio of
8:1.
Concept A has core engine exhaust and bypass streams separately expanding to different
final velocities. The bypass stream (after the fan) has a stagnation pressure P0 = 0.16 MPa
and stagnation temperature T0 = 350 K. The core engine exhaust has stagnation temperature
T0c = 700 K and the same stagnation pressure as the bypass stream and f = 0.025.
Concept B would have the two streams mixing at constant pressure before expansion
through the same pressure ratio P0/Pe as in concept A.
Determine the ratio of take off thrusts of concepts B and A. Assume = 1.4 for both the
streams.
