Title: What is Democracy?

Unit: Democracy

Objective: Students will be able to develop a hypothesis investigating the variables that affect
democracy.

Standards Alignments:

SS.CV.2.4 : Explain how a democracy relies on peoples responsible participation, and draw
implications for how individuals should participate.
SS.CV.3.4: Identify core civic virtues (such as honesty, mutual respect, cooperation, and
attentiveness to multiple perspectives) and democratic principles (such as equality, freedom,
liberty, and respect for individual rights) that guide our state and nation.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.1
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid
reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
4-PS3-3: Ask questions that can be investigated and predict reasonable outcomes based on
patterns such as cause and effect relationships.

Procedure:
The teacher will start a dialogue by asking the students what they think democracy is or
means.
There will be a class discussion on the elements or variables of democracy and how it
plays a role in their own lives.
The teacher will ask the students to think of multiple variables that they think would
create a better or ideal democracy.
The teacher will talk about how to form an if, then statement in order to propose a
hypothesis.
The students will define an ideal democracy by composing an if, then statement using
the variables they earlier thought about.
After discussing the students statements, they will do further research to gather support
for their hypothesis on democracy.
The students will also be given a chance to test their different variables as a way to
experiment to see how it might affect their hypothesis.
The students will then develop an equation or formula as a result of their
experimentation to best support their hypothesis.
The students will share their results and final methods for a successful democracy.
