Rib Creation: Step 1: Open Ribs - Tool - HM in Hypermesh Step 2: Create A Triangular Rib

The document describes a new rib creation tool that allows users to create and modify simple triangular and quadrilateral ribs between surfaces in a modeling program. Key steps outlined include selecting the rib type, profile plane, and start/end nodes and adjusting rib parameters like height, length, width, and draft angle. The tutorial provides guidance on using the tool to add both a triangular rib and intersecting quadrilateral rib to a model.

Rib Creation

A new geometric rib tool is now available that enables creation and modification of
simple ribs between surfaces. Several rib parameters such as height, length, and width
can be controlled interactively. The newly created rib is automatically stitched into the
adjoined solid and/or surfaces. Both triangular rib for T-joints and quadrilateral ribs for U-
sections are supported. To download the models for the exercise, click here.

Step 1: Open ribs_tool.hm in HyperMesh

Step 2: Create a Triangular Rib

1. Click Geometry > Create > Solids > Ribs to open the Ribs panel.
2. Click the rib type switch to open it.

3. Click triangular to create a triangular rib.

4. Click the profile plane switch to open the menu.
5. Click x-axis to set the plane on the x-axis.
6. Drag the mouse to select the surface the base node is placed as shown in the
image.
7. Click on the model as shown in the image to set the base node for the plane.
8. Click the plane position switch to open the menu,
This switch sets where the plane will reside on the rib. It can be set to be centered
on the rib, down the left side or down the right side.

9. Click centered to have the rib centered on the plane.

10. Click node for rib start node to activate the selector.
11. Zoom in on the model as shown in the image.
12. Click in the approximate area as shown in the image to set the rib start point.

13. Click node for rib end node to activate the selector.
14. Click in the approximate location in the image to create the rib end node.
15. Enter 60 in the height field.
16. Enter 200 in the length field.
17. Enter 10 in the width field.
18. Enter 5 in the draft angle field.
19. Click the end node and drag it to a new location.
The end need can be moved during the creation of the rib if necessary.
20. Enter 10 in the draft angle field.
21. Click add to add the rib to the model.
Step 3: Create a Quadrilateral Rib Intersecting the Triangular Rib
1. Click the rib type switch to open the menu.
2. Click quadrilateral to select the option.
3. Click the profile plane switch to open the menu.
4. Click z-axis to set the direction.
5. Click and drag the most to select the surface shown.

6. Click in the approximately as in the image to set the base point.

7. Click node for rib start node to activate the selector.

8. Click as in the image to set the rib start node.
9. Click node for rib end node to activate the selector.
10. Rotate the model and click to select the node as shown in the image.

11. Enter 60 in the height1 field.

This is the height for the start node.
12. Enter 60 in the height2 field.
This is the height at the end node.
13. Enter 15 in the width field.
14. Enter 0 in the draft angle field.
15. Enter 45 in the height2 field.
The height values do not have to match.
16. Click add to add the rib to the model.
