Put The Verbs in Brackets Into The Past Simple or Past Continuous Tense, As Appropriate

Brent told his friend about an unpleasant experience he had while traveling alone in Malaysia. He arrived tired one evening at a small, run-down hotel and went straight to bed. In the middle of the night, Brent woke up with a creepy feeling and heard scratching noises coming from his backpack. To his horror, a huge 50cm rat emerged and stared at him with red eyes. Without warning, the rat jumped at Brent, who screamed and fought it off. He did not sleep again that night and left at dawn.
