Section 14 Graphing Rational Functions: y X X X y

The document provides instructions for analyzing and graphing 9 different rational functions. For each function, students are asked to determine the domain, intercepts, symmetry, asymptotes, behavior of the first and second derivatives to understand maxima/minima and concavity, and then graph the function using the given window. The functions range in complexity from a simple linear rational function to more complicated expressions involving higher degree polynomials in both the numerator and denominator.

Section 14 Graphing Rational Functions

Perform an analysis of the following functions, y f x, by providing the following information:

1. domain;
2. intercepts, both x and y, if any;
3. symmetry (even, odd, neither);
4. analysis at infinity, asymptotes (vertical, horizontal and slant, if any), including intersection
points with an asymptote, if any (the long division has been performed for you);
5. first derivative analysis, intervals of increase and decrease, local maxima and minima, if any
(the derivatives have been computed and factored for you);
6. second derivative analysis, concavity and inflection points;
7. graph the function using the information above, using the suggested window for x and y.
