Notes: Samuel Barr left a diary which is quoted in the Family History book,
It appears that the Robert Barr family decided that they had to leave
Ireland because o.f great difficulty in getting more farm land, They sold
most of their possessions at auction and set sail f or America, The boat
was blown back ~.l most to the shore on the first day out, and the Journey
took thirteen weeks, (July 26 — Octobar 3, 1790) They landed at New
Castle Delaware to pick up a pilot, then on to disembark at Philadelphia,
and with great difficulty, using horses and wagons initially and a river
boat eventually, went north to Lancaster and then to Harrisburg and on
to Lewistown (Oldtown), Thare they found David and Robert, who had
preceeded them by sevn.ral years, They lived near Lewis town f or some time,
but eventually Robert (senior) moved the family to McAlevy ~s Fort, where z~
log house was built on a two hundred acre farm, near Stone Creek in 1796,
Notes: Captain SamLel Barr was in a Civi~ War battle near Kansas City,
Mi s~o~~i in 1B64~ 96 was sLat in the left thigh ano Jater an amputation
of his left leg was perfnrmed~ He deve aped pneumonia while in the
hospital in Kansas City and died on Nuv~ 28, At his direction a friend
accompanied his body home to Lee County, Iowa, where he aas buried~

In the spring of 1991, we visited Lyle Barr and his wife in Carthage, II,
He guided us to the Sharon Presbyterian OFurch, in Lee County, Iowa
several mi lee west of Dor nelson, where, with the assi stance o+ the
Sezton of the church, we ~Touna Samuel Barr grave, The limestone
marker ic badly eroded and only partially readable, We also learned
from the Sexton that Camuel ‘s sister Hannah was buried beside him in
an unmarked grave, She died at age 22 of palmonary tuberculosis~

James Barr enlisted in the Army in 1962 in the same company as

his brother, He was boss cook far the compan~, On a cavalry raid,
beqinning December 18, 1964, from Memphis~ Tennessee to Vicksburq, his
company stopped at a pond on January ~, 1965 to water their hrrses,
A rebel group started fi~ing at some distance and James was shot in the
stomach, He was carried to a nearby hou~e and treated by a physician,
who said he would not ive long The ehels overran the area~ It is
presumed that James Oied in th house or by action of the rebels,
possibl~j on the same day~ His grave ~s unmarked and tte location unknown~
