Lesson Plan 1-2
Lesson Plan 1-2
CC Standard Addressed: (1.MD.3) Tell and write time in hours and half-
hours using analog and digital clocks.
Materials Needed:
Chart Paper (one with example of an analog and digital clock, and
another with the Analog clock song on it)
One analog clock (Use as an example)
One digital clock (Use as an example)
Expo Markers (One for each student)
Paper Towels (One for each student)
Analog/Digital clock paddles (One for each student)
Printed Worksheet (One for each student)
Activities:
1. Have students learn to tell the difference from the large minute hand
and the smaller hour hand of a clock by learning a simple rhyme that will
be posted at the front of the classroom
The poster (chart paper) reads: Im a smaller hour hand, short and
stout. I tell the hour and give a shout. Im a larger minute hand, big
and tall. I tell the minute and thats all.
Also included on the chart paper will be a picture of a clock with the
hour and minute hands highlighted in different colors, so the students
can easily see the difference between the two.
2. Draw several examples of different times on a clock on the board, such as
1 oclock, 10 oclock, 12 oclock, and 5 oclock.
Ask students: Which one is the hour hand and which one is the
minute hand on each clock? Ask other questions as needed to help
prepare students to move on to telling time and writing time to the
nearest hour on an analog clock on their own by asking: What time
does each of these clocks say? What do the numbers (1,2,3,4,5,etc)
on the clock mean? How many minutes are in an hour? How do we
know? Why is the minute hand always on the 12 when we are telling
time to the nearest hour? How would I write this time?
1. Provide each student with a write on/wipe off clock paddles, as well as
one expo dry-erase marker, and a paper towel. Each paddle will have an
analog clock on one side of it and the other side will be a digital clock
Ask students what side of the paddle we will be using today? Students
should be able to know to turn the paddle to the analog clock that is
made up of numbers all the way around it, from our previous
discussion and examples.
2. Have students sit in pairs around the classroom. Explain to students that
they will be required to use their expo marker to write the correct time using
the hour and minute hand. Each student will be responsible for writing the
time that will be written on the board on their own paddle and should turn
their paddle over when they are done. Instruct students to wait they are
instructed to collaborate with their partner. As partners they must show each
other their paddles and discuss when instructed to, why they both agree or
dont agree with each others answer? Why are they right or wrong and how
did they get their answer?
3. After giving students time with their partners, select one set of partners
to share with the group their answer and why they believe they are right?
Does the class agree? Why or why not?
4. Have the class run through as many different examples as time permits.
Part 4: Learning to tell time on an analog clock by the hour worksheet (If
time permits)
1. Have each students work independently to tell and write the time that is
shown on each of the (8) clocks on the worksheet.
2. If students dont have time to finish their worksheet have students keep
their worksheet, so they can complete it during the beginning of the next
math class, which can be used as a review and launching point into telling
time on an analog clock by the half hour as well.
1. Walking around and doing visual checks of students work as they write
the time on their clock paddle, noting any individual student difficulties, or
areas that the class as a whole is struggling with.
2. Facilitating discussions with groups when students are discussing their
answer with their partner. Ask further questions and points of clarification.
Select certain groups that will help to further enhance class discussion.
3. Examine students individual answers on their worksheet. Are their any
common errors? Are there areas that students are excelling at?
