COURSEDESCRIPTION
Thiscoursewillexposethestudenttotheworldofasportsofficial.Varioussportssuchas
basketball,volleyball,baseball,andfootballwillbeexamined.Thiscoursewilltestnotonly
yourknowledgeandphysicalskillsbutalsohowyourespondandhandlepeopleinagreat
teachingenvironmentthatcanattimesbecomevolatile.Youwilllearnaboutthecareer
opportunitiesinbecomingasportsofficialaswellashowtoprepareforthestatetesttobecome
aregisteredofficial.
CRITICALCOURSEOBJECTIVES
Studentswillunderstandanddemonstratetheirunderstandingfortheintegrity,honesty,
sportsmanship,courage,andfairmindednessneededtobecomeasportsofficial.
Studentswilllearnandbetestedontheirknowledgeoftherulesofthesport,playingarea
design,anddimensions.
Studentswilldemonstratetheirknowledgeofproperpositioningontheplayingareaand
properhandsignalstobeusedduringacontest.
Studentswillworkforthehighschoolatanactivitytopracticewhattheyhavelearned.
Studentswilllearnhowtodealwiththepublicinveryemotionalsituationsbybeing
calm,beingfair,andalwaysremainingconsistent.
Studentswillunderstandandpracticetheartofofficiatingputtinganemphasison
helpingyoungpeoplelearntherulesandprovidinganatmosphereforyoungpeopleto
competeunderthoserules.

READINGEXPECTATIONS
Studentswillbeexpectedtoreadthebookletspertainingtothesportwearecoveringandalso
thewebsite.Therewillbevariouswrittenexercisesandreadingassignmentsthatwillneedtobe
read.

EXPECTATIONS
Studentsmustprovideanotebookandwritingutensil.Theymustalsoprovideawhistletobe
usedduringtheirpracticums.Studentswillbeexpectedtodressondayswearedoingthesport
practicum.Studentsareexpectedtoattendclasseverydaypreparedtodiscussthetopicsofthe
day.Allmembersofthisclassmustvolunteertohelpatasportingeventaspartoftheirschool
service.Anyonefailingtofulfillthisrequirementwillnotreceivecreditforthisclass.
UNITSOFSTUDY
Wewillstudyandofficiatethesportsofvolleyball,football,basketball,andbaseball.
COURSEEVALUATION
Assignments
1Thefirstweekwillbeusedtofamiliarizethestudentwiththecodeofethicseachofficialneeds
inanysporttheydecidetowork.EachstudentmustcompleteaflipbookwiththeNFHScodeof
ethicstodemonstratetheirunderstandingofwhatisexpectedofanofficial.
2Studentswilldrawandlabeladiagramofeachsportcovered.
3Throughouteachunitstudentswillbetestedovertheknowledgeofrules,abilitytoidentify
andperformvisiblesignals,andafinaltestovereachunit.
4Studentsmustperforminanofficiatingcapacityineachsport.Theywillusetheirlearned
skillstoofficiateclassmatesincompetitivegames.
5Studentsmustperformapublicservicefortheschoolbyhelpingofficiatelinesatavolleyball
game,manthechainsatfootballgames,helpatacrosscountrymeet,ortimeataswimmeet.
