Solidmechanis2 Assignment 2

This document is an assignment report discussing the application of Castigliano's theorem on the deflection of a truss structure. The report compares the deflection of the structure obtained from an Abaqus simulation to a calculated value using Castigliano's theorem. Both values were approximately equal, though a small difference could be due to misalignment of the truss members. The experiment showed the deflection of the truss changed slightly with an applied load, as expected based on the elastic behavior of the structure. Some measurement errors occurred from the mechanical instruments used.

Discussion

From the stimulation result obtained in Abaqus, it can be shown that the magnitude of the
deflection, u at the end point of A where the axial load applied on it had obtained a value
of 6.06 x10-5 m which is approximate equal to the calculated result of 6.08x10 -5m. The
small difference in the value of deflection might be caused by the irregular alignment of
the truss structure. Each member of the truss that jointed with each other is installing with
a sensor that directly linked to the machine indicator when a load is applied on it. This
will caused the stimulation of the result to be different from the Abaqus and the
calculation that do not obey the Castigliano's theorem. This theorem applied to the
structure that have a constant temperature, unyielding support in which there is no any
external part available within the rigid body of truss and have a linear elastic material
response. From the experiment, the value of the truss force before the experiment if not
maintained at 0 N due to the misalignment of the truss structure. When the external load
is applied on it, the deflection of the truss at the end point will caused an small
approximate change in length of 190mm with 10mm for one turns in which the truss
force will deflect randomly. Due to the elastic behaviour of the truss structure , the
deflection of the truss resulting from the internal work is not exactly equal to the partial
differential of the strain energy with respect to that external load due to some parallax
error in the experimental setup measurement. when adjusting the reading of the truss
force where the deflection of the beam take place, the reading seems to be differ as the
needle inside the meter deflect unconditionally. When lower down the height of the meter
by rotate the shaft behind it where the deflection of the truss further lower down, the
measurement of the reading might be corrupted as the measurement of the value must be
continuous and the meter can be lower down automatically. This can be improve by
replacing the mechanical reading meter with the digital that able to raise and lower down
the meter with just one switch that will further improve the accuracy of the result.
