Lesson:
This activity is meant to help students recognize and remember the phases of the moon and the
order in which they occur.
Begin lesson by having students describe what the moon looks like and how it
changes shape based on what they have learned over the past week (SMART Lesson,
Brain Pop Jr., The Moon Book we read)
Explain to the students that they will be using Oreo cookies to make the phases
of the moon and to put them in order. Demonstrate how to twist the cookies open so that
all the frosting is on one side of the cookie.
Pass out 3 cookies to each student, a paper towel, a plastic knife, and a copy of
the moon phase worksheet to each student.
Have the students use their pencils to sketch what they think the moon phases
look like in each box and raise their hand to have you check before they start using their
cookies to make the phases.
