BMFA 3313 Control Systems Assignment 1: Figure 1: Truck Support Model

The document describes a 1/4 truck model that represents the suspension system and tire as a mass-spring-damper system. It provides the specifications of the truck body mass, suspension mass, spring constants of the suspension and tire, and damping constants. It asks the reader to write the equations of motion for the system and calculate the transfer functions relating the displacements of the truck body and tire to an input force, as well as their relative displacement.

Control Systems

ASSIGNMENT 1

Figure 1(a) shows a force F acted on the support spring of a truck that being added with a
load, and make the tyre flexes. A truck model (one of the four wheels) is used to
simplify the tyre movement to a one-dimensional (1D) multiple mass-spring-damper
system as shown in Figure 1(b).

Figure 1: Truck support model

This system has the following specifications:

truck body mass (mv) = 2.5 x 103 kg
Suspension mass (mt) = 0.32 x 103 kg
Spring constant of suspension system (k1) = 80 x 103 N/m
Spring constant of wheel and tire (k2) = 500 x 103 N/m
Damping constant of suspension system (b1) = 0.35 x 103 Ns/m
Damping constant of wheel and tire (b2) = 15.02 x 103 Ns/m

ANSWER ALL THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1. Write the equations of motion of the system.

2. Compute the following:
(a) Transfer function G1(s) = X1 / F(s),
(b) Transfer function G2(s) = X2 / F(s),
(c) Transfer function G3(s) = X1 - X2 / F(s).
