ANALYSIS

Lesson Title: Creating Surveys with Google Forms

Instructors: Buffie Lee (Teacher) and Kelsey Kicklighter (Media Specialist)

Students: 9th and 10th Grade (2 sections)

Subject: Sociology

Time Frame: 90 minutes

Identification of a Learning Problem: For an upcoming Sociology project,

students will be required to create research surveys to administer to their
fellow students. During the planning process, students decided to create
implement face-to-face interviews, rather than utilizing technology. When
pressed for why, students revealed a lack of knowledge/confidence with
creating surveys.

DESIGN

Objectives: Students will learn to use Google Forms to create surveys, and
determine what question types would suit their needs best.

Georgia Standards for Excellence:

SSSocFR2: Students will explain the research methodologies used in

sociology.

a. Identify the major research methods used in sociology.

b. Explain how various methods are used to conduct research in sociology.

c. Evaluate the strengths and weakness of the methods of sociology

research.

d. Explain the importance and influence of ethics in guiding research and

data collection

in sociology.

subjects, and make the realworld connection for using this process in own
life.
1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information
and pursuing inquiry.

2.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize
information

3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display
knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.

3.3.4 Create products that apply to authentic, real-world contexts.

Evaluation: Students will create their own surveys to be reviewed by the

teacher and Media Specialist, and rate their own skill levels on a Google
Form.

DEVELOPMENT

Instructional Plan

Opener: The teacher will open the lesson by engaging students in

conversations of their upcoming project. She will discuss the different types
of research and the specific requirements of their project, and ask students
what types of research tools they know of.

Direct Instruction: The teacher will explain that the students are in the library
to learn about Google Forms and how to create a survey from the Media
Specialist. The Media Specialist will then show students how to create a
survey on Google Forms via the projector. They will learn the different types
of questions, the way those questions will be analyzed, and how to share and
save the survey and results.

Guided Practice: Students will create a survey as a group with the help of the
Media Specialist. They will come up with questions and discuss what type of
question would work best.

Independent Practice: Students will retrieve chrome books from the Media
Center cart. They will each create their own short surveys, then share them
with the other students at their tables to answer. Once they have a few
answers, they should explore the results tab to view the answer charts and
graphs. The teacher and Media Specialist will go to each table to check on
the surveys and make sure they are not having any problems.

Reflection: Students will answer a survey indicating whether or not they feel
competent and comfortable with the technology.

2
IMPLEMENTATION

Students will be brought to the library with their teacher during 1B and 4A
Sociology classes for a collaborative lesson. The lesson and practice should
take approximately 90 minutes. They will be using the information learned in
this lesson in a project they are creating for their unit on research and
surveys.

EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated individually by the teacher and Media Specialist

on the practice surveys they create. They will also answer a self-evaluation
survey to rate their own proficiency with the technology.
